Patriot League Announces Corvias Football Players of the Week (11.20.17)

Mayes, Page and Longi earn final weekly honors of the season

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lehigh junior quarterback Brad Mayes earned Most Valuable Player honors following the 153rd Lehigh-Lafayette Game to help him pick up his second Patriot League Football Corvias Offensive Player of the Week Award this season. Mayes passed for 397 yards and three touchdowns in a comeback victory to clinch a share of the League title and an automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs.
 
Bucknell freshman linebacker Simeon Page was selected the Corvias Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week for his League season-high 6.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks against Fordham. Page earns first defensive player of the week and second rookie award. Fordham junior kick returner Austin Longi’s 90-yard punt return for a touchdown broke the Patriot League record for longest punt return, supporting his case for Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week. This is Longi’s first weekly honor.
 
Fordham senior running back Chase Edmonds earned honorable mention for his 185-yard, two-touchdown performance against Bucknell. Georgetown sophomore defensive lineman Khristian Tate was also selected as an honorable mention after returning an interception 29-yards for a touchdown, while registering nine tackles. Lafayette senior kick returner C.J. Amill returned a kickoff 96 yards and Colgate freshman running back Malik Twyman ran for a career-high 108 yards to both round out the list of weekly honorable mentions.
 
The Patriot League football Corvias Players of the Week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.

Brad Mayes, Lehigh, Jr., QB, Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep
Mayes was named the Most Valuable Player for the 153rd Lehigh-Lafayette game, after completing 35-of-49 passes for 397 yards and three touchdowns in a comeback victory over the Leopards. The Mountain Hawks trailed by 10 points with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter, before Mayes led three scoring drives, capping two with touchdown passes, to help clinch a share of the Patriot League title and automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. This is Mayes’ second Corvias Offensive Player of the Week this season and third of his career.
 
Corvias Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week
Simeon Page, Bucknell, Fr., LB/DE, Riverton, Utah/Riverton/USAFA Prep
Page posted a Patriot League season-high 6.0 tackles for loss (TFL) of 33 yards and tied the League season-high with 4.0 sacks for a loss of 27 yards in Bucknell’s loss to Fordham. The freshman also had eight total tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup in the dominant effort. His 4.0 sacks tied a Bucknell program record, originally set in 1998.
 
Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week
Austin Longi, Fordham, Jr., WR/PR, Stamford, Conn./Greenwich
Longi returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown, breaking the Fordham and Patriot League record for longest punt return. He finished with 106 punt return yards on five attempts for a 21.2 yards per return average. The junior also had two catches for 16 yards.  
 
Honorable Mention
Chase Edmonds, Fordham, Sr., RB, Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East
Edmonds closed out his record-breaking career with 185 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead Fordham to a 20-9 victory over Bucknell. His two touchdowns came on rushes of 65 and 55 yards. Edmonds closes out his career with 5,862 rushing yards – fifth best in FCS history – and 74 career touchdowns. His 67 career rushing touchdowns is fourth in FCS history. Edmonds holds the Patriot League record in each of those categories.
 
Khristian Tate, Georgetown, So., DL, Warner Robins, Ga./Covenant Academy
Tate intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the game in Georgetown’s loss to Colgate. It was Tate’s second defensive touchdown of the season to tie Bucknell’s Colin Jonov for the League lead. Tate also had nine tackles, 1.0 TFL and one fumble recovery.  
C.J. Amill, Lafayette, Sr., RB/KR, Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney
Amill returned a kickoff for a 96-yard touchdown – his first career kickoff return for a touchdown – in the third quarter against Lehigh to put the Leopards in front by 10 points. It was the fourth-longest kickoff return in Lafayette history. He finished with 120 return yards on two attempts. Amill also rushed five times for 16 yards.  
 
Malik Twyman, Colgate, Fr., RB, Williamstown, N.J./The Haverford School
Twyman rushed for a career-high 108 yards on 13 attempts, averaging 8.3 yards per carry to help Colgate clinch a share of the Patriot League title. The freshman ball carrier helped the Raiders control time of possession, keeping the offense on the field for 43:55.
