CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy senior catcher Adrian Chinnery earned his first Patriot League Baseball Corvias Player of the Week honor of the season after hitting .529 with seven RBIs to help Navy sweep Lafayette over the weekend. Lehigh senior RHP Connor Donovan earns the Corvias Pitcher of the Week after tossing a 7.0-inning complete game shutout in a win over Holy Cross. Navy freshman designated hitter Evan Lowery batted .375 with seven RBIs to help the Mids to a 5-1 week, earning his first Corvias Rookie of the Week honor this season.
Army West Point junior outfielder John McCarthy batted .478, while setting a Black Knights single-game record with four doubles against Bucknell to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll. Holy Cross senior outfielder Bill Schlich batted .353 with five RBIs to join McCarthy on the list. Navy senior RHP Kyle Condry tossed his third consecutive complete game to earn a 7-1 win over Lafayette, while Army West Point junior LHP Jeremy Mortensen made three appearances spanning 8.0 innings, allowing just one earned run to help the Black Knights take a four-game series from Bucknell.
This weekend will be the third weekend of Patriot League play, with Lehigh hosting Navy, Bucknell hosting Lafayette and Army West Point hosting Holy Cross. Fans can view Patriot League baseball games on the Patriot League Network on Saturday and Sunday.
ARMY WEST POINT AND NAVY ATOP PATRIOT LEAGUE STANDINGS AFTER SECOND WEEK OF LEAGUE PLAY
Navy swept its four-game weekend series against Lafayette and Army West Point took three-of-four games from Bucknell to place both teams at 6-2 in a tie for first-place in the Patriot League. Preseason favorite Holy Cross took three-of-four games from Lehigh, winning the last three games of the series to move into third place. Bucknell is fourth with a 4-4 record, while Lehigh (2-6) and Lafayette (1-7) round out the Patriot League standings after two weeks of League play.
NCAA LEADERS IN THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
*Navy is 17th in NCAA Division I with a team batting average of.313 and sixth in the nation with 373 hits. The Mids batted .335 with 27 extra-base hits last week.
*Navy’s Travis Blue (.374) leads the Patriot League in batting, with the Mids Leland Saile (.367), Logan Knowles (.362) and Zach Biggers (.351) rounding out the top four.
*The Mids are second in the nation with 20 triples. Knowles, Blue and Lowery are tied for 14th with four apiece.
*Lehigh is 40th in the nation, averaging 1.00 home runs per game. They have a total of 30 this season. Jacen Nalesnik has seven, Connor Donovan has five.
*Navy’s Kyle Condry and Lafayette’s Trevor Houck are tied for fourth in the nation with three complete games apiece.
*Navy outfielder Leland Saile is 7th in the nation with 45 RBIs.
*Lehigh freshman pitcher Levi Stoudt leads the Patriot League and is 86th in NCAA Division I with a 2.15 ERA.
*Bucknell’s Connor Van Hoose is 32nd in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (11.87), while he and Navy’s Noah Song are tied for 28th in the nation with 62 strikeouts.
PATRIOT LEAGUE/NCAA BASEBALL WEEKLY AWARDS
CORVIAS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ADRIAN CHINNERY, NAVY, Sr., C, Wilmington, Del.
Chinnery batted .529 (9-for-17) with five runs scored and seven RBIs to help Navy go 5-1, including a four-game sweep over Lafayette last week. Chinnery reached base at a .579 clip and slugged .824 during the week for the Midshipmen. The senior catcher hit in all five games with five of his nine hits going for extra bases, all doubles. He also walked twice. Chinnery went 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring one in an 11-3 win over Coppin State earlier in the week. He drove in two runs and doubled in Navy’s game two victory over Lafayette on Saturday. He had a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored, two doubles and an RBI in Sunday’s game one victory over the Leopards. His 23 RBIs this season has already surpassed his total from last season.
CORVIAS PITCHER OF THE WEEK
CONNOR DONOVAN, LEHIGH, Sr., RHP, Yardley, Pa.
Donovan led Lehigh to its only win last week, tossing 7.0 inning complete game shutout, while scattering four hits, walking one and striking out seven in a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross. The senior right-hander’s seven strikeouts is a career-high, while holding the Crusaders scoreless for the first time in League play this season. Donovan, the week six player of the week, allowed just two runners to reach scoring position over his 7.0 innings.
CORVIAS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
EVAN LOWERY, NAVY, Fr., DH, Williamsburg, Va.
Lowery batted .375 (9-for-24), while slugging .625 with an on-base percentage. The freshman designated hitter scored four runs, drove in seven and had two doubles and two triples during Navy’s 5-1 week. Lowery went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a triple in an 11-3 win over Coppin State during the week. He opened the Lafayette series with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and a double. He drove in runs in both of Sunday’s victories. Lowery is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak.
HONORABLE MENTION
JOHN MCCARTHY, ARMY WEST POINT, Jr., OF, Jupiter, Fla.
McCarthy batted .478 (11-for-23), while slugging .696 and reaching base at a .480 clip during a 4-1 week for Army West Point. The junior outfielder scored seven runs and drove in eight, including a 6-for-7 game with an Army record four doubles, four runs scored and five RBIs in a 16-14 victory over Bucknell in an 11-inning game on Sunday. McCarthy opened the week with a 2-for-4 performance against Manhattan, where he scored twice and drove in the game-tying run in an eventual 7-5 win. He also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in a 10-1 win over the Bison in game two on Saturday.
BILL SCHLICH, HOLY CROSS, Sr., OF, Massapequa, N.Y.
Schlich batted. 353 (6-for-17) with four runs and five RBIs during a 4-1 week for Holy Cross. The senior outfielder reached base at a .389 clip, while slugging .588 for the Crusaders. He drove in two runs apiece in an 8-1 win over Lehigh on Saturday and a 7-3 win over Lehigh on Sunday. Schlich went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in the Crusaders 5-2 win over Dartmouth earlier in the week.
KYLE CONDRY, NAVY, Sr., RHP, Highland Village, Texas
Condry tossed his third-consecutive complete game, finishing 7.0 innings, while scattering six hits and allowing just one run in a 7-1 victory over Lafayette. The senior right-hander struck out eight batters and walked two to help the Mids sweep the series with the Leopards. Condry allowed a run in the first inning, before shutting Lafayette down for the final six innings.
JEREMY MORTENSEN, ARMY WEST POINT, Jr., LHP, Coppell, Texas
Mortensen made three appearances spanning 8.0 innings, including starting game two on Saturday against Bucknell. The junior southpaw allowed just one earned run on five hits over the 8.0 innings, while striking out nine and walking three. Mortensen pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Army’s 7-5 win against Manhattan earlier in the week. He also tossed a scoreless inning of relief, striking out three against the Bison in a 7-4 win in eight innings. He returned in the second-half of the doubleheader to start, going 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on one hit, while walking three and striking out six.
