Patriot League Announces Corvias Baseball Weekly Awards (4.18.17)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lafayette junior second baseman Steven Cohen batted .688 and scored seven runs to earn Patriot League Baseball Corvias Player of the Week for the first time this season. He is joined by Holy Cross senior RHP Brendan King, who tossed a complete game shutout against Army West Point to help the Crusaders move into second-place in the Patriot League. Lehigh freshman RHP Levi Stoudt earns Corvias Rookie of the Week for the second time after allowing just one unearned run over 7.0 complete innings against Navy.
 
Bucknell senior outfielder Brett Smith earns honorable mention after batting .529 with five runs and three RBIs during a 4-1 week. He is joined by teammate and junior RHP Connor Van Hoose who stuck out nine batters in a complete-game victory over Lafayette on Saturday. Navy senior outfielder Logan Knowles also earns a spot on the honor roll, batting .346, while scoring six runs and driving in six during the Mids 6-0 week. Navy senior RHP Kyle Condry earns another spot on the honor roll after tossing 6.1 shutout innings to earn a 1-0 win over Lehigh.
 
THIS WEEK IN THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
Each Patriot League team is in action midweek, with Bucknell hosting St. Bonaventure for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. A pair of Tuesday afternoon games will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network (PLN) with Lehigh hosting Iona (3 p.m.) and Army West Point hosting Albany (3:30 p.m.). Navy hosts George Mason on Wednesday afternoon, while Holy Cross hosts Siena and Lafayette travels to Monmouth.
 
Patriot League conference play continues this weekend, as Bucknell (17-18, 8-4 PL) travels to Holy Cross (15-19, 8-4) with each team looking for sole possession of second-place and to lock up a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. Coverage on the PLN begins at noon on Saturday.
 
Lehigh (11-24, 2-10 PL) takes on rival Lafayette (3-36, 1-11 PL) in a four-game series with each game available on the PLN. Lehigh currently sits 5.0 games behind Army West Point for the final spot in the Patriot League Tournament with eight League games remaining.
 
First-place Navy (29-12, 10-2) will take on rival Army (17-21, 7-5 PL), who is currently fourth in the Patriot League standings. The Mids are looking to clinch home field advantage in the Patriot League Tournament, while the Black Knights will look to seal their postseason bid.
 
NAVY CLINCHES PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT BERTH; HOLY CROSS, BUCKNELL, ARMY WEST POINT ON THE VERGE OF POSTSEASON BIDS
Navy has won 11-consecutive games, including its last eight League games, to become the first team to clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth. The Mids are currently two games ahead of Bucknell and Holy Cross in the standings with a magic number of 7 to clinch home field advantage.
 
Bucknell and Holy Cross will meet in a four-game series this weekend with each looking for sole possession of second-place in the League. Both the Bison and Crusaders have a magic number of three to clinch a postseason berth. Army will look to slow down the Mids and clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth, as well, going into the weekend with a magic number of 4.

*Navy is 19th in NCAA Division I with a team batting average of.307 and fifth in the nation with 431 hits. The Mids have reached base at a .391 clip this season; 29th-best in the nation.   
*Navy’s Logan Knowles is ninth in the nation with 59 hits and sixth with five triples and fourth with 46 runs. Teammate Travis Blue is 13th in hits with 58.
*Lehigh is 42nd in the nation, averaging 1.00 home runs per game. They have a total of 35 this season. Jacen Nalesnik has nine; Connor Donovan has five.  
*Navy’s Kyle Condry, Lafayette’s Trevor Houck and Holy Cross’s Brendan King are tied for sixth in the nation with three complete games apiece.
*Navy outfielder Leland Saile is 8th in the nation with 48 RBIs.
*Lehigh freshman pitcher Levi Stoudt leads the Patriot League and is 39th in NCAA Division I with a 1.81 ERA. 
*Bucknell’s Connor Van Hoose and Navy’s Noah Song are tied for 21st in the nation with 71 strikeouts. Van Hoose is 26th in strikeouts per nine, averaging 11.83.

CORVIAS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
STEVEN COHEN, LAFAYETTE, Jr., 2B, Newtown Square, Pa.
Cohen batted .688 (11-of-16), while reaching base at a .750 clip and slugging 1.000 over five games for Lafayette last week. The junior lead-off hitter hit in each of the team’s five games, with four multi-hit games, while scoring seven runs and stealing two bases. Cohen went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in a game one loss to Bucknell on Saturday. He went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored in game one on Sunday. In the second game of the doubleheader, Cohen went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two stolen bases.
 
CORVIAS PITCHER OF THE WEEK
BRENDAN KING, HOLY CROSS, Sr., RHP, Brookline, Mass.
King tossed a complete game shutout, going 7.0 scoreless innings to earn a 2-0 victory over Army West Point in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The senior right-hander scattered five hits and struck out a season-high eight batters for his second win of the season. The complete game was King’s third of season. He now has a 3.75 earned run average over nine starts, spanning 48.0 innings this season.

CORVIAS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
LEVI STOUDT, LEHIGH, Fr., RHP, Pennsburg, Pa.
Stoudt held Navy’s offense to one unearned run on three hits, over 7.0 complete innings in a tough-luck loss for the freshman. The rookie right-hander struck out three and walked one, while holding the League’s highest scoring offense (7.70 runs per game) well under its season average. Stoudt leads the Patriot League with a 1.81 ERA in nine starts, spanning 44.2 innings.
 
HONORABLE MENTION
BRETT SMITH, BUCKNELL, Sr., OF, Hanover, Pa.
Smith batted .529 (9-for-17), while hitting in each of Bucknell’s five games, including two multi-hit games against Lafayette. The senior centerfielder scored five runs, had three doubles, one triple and one home run, while driving in three runs and stealing one base during the week. Smith went 4-for-4 with a triple, a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base in a winning effort. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader with Lafayette.
 
LOGAN KNOWLES, NAVY, Jr., OF, Port Orchard, Wash.
Knowles batted .346 (9-for-26) with a .433 on-base percentage, while slugging .500 to help Navy go 6-0 last week and clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament. The senior centerfielder scored six runs and drove in six during the week. Against Maryland Eastern Shore, Knowles went 3-for-5 with one double, one triple and three RBIs. In two Sunday games against Lehigh, Knowles went 5-for-9 with two runs in a pair of wins.

CONNOR VAN HOOSE, BUCKNELL, Jr., RHP, Alexandria, Va.
Van Hoose earned a complete game victory, going 7.0 innings in a 4-1 win over Lafayette on Saturday. The junior right-hander scattered six hits, allowing one unearned run, while striking out nine and walking none. The win was Van Hoose’s fourth of the season, as he is second in the Patriot League with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts, spanning 54.0 innings pitched. He is tied for the League lead with 71 strikeouts.
 
KYLE CONDRY, NAVY, Sr., RHP, Highland Village, Texas
Condry tossed 6.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out two and walking two to earn a 1-0 win over Lehigh. The senior right-hander did not allow a base runner to reach second base, while dropping his League ERA to 0.89 in three starts spanning 20.1 innings pitched.
