Center Valley, Pa — Loyola Maryland –the winner of Patriot League Men’s Soccer regular-season title– received three of the League’s six men’s soccer major awards when the League office announced its postseason honors on Monday. Second-place Lehigh, Colgate and Navy captured one apiece.
Greyhounds’ junior midfielder Barry Sharifi earned the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Midfielder of the Year, while teammate sophomore Chase Vosvick was named goalkeeper of the year. Loyola Maryland head coach Steve Nichols picked up his third-straight Patriot League Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year honor. Lehigh senior forward Mark Forrest was awarded Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Colgate’s senior defender Aram Ouligian nabbed defensive player of the year, while Navy freshman forward Jacob Williams rounded out the major awards as he collected rookie of the year honors.
Eleven student-athletes were named to the 2018 Patriot League Men’s Soccer First Team, with 12 on the second team and 11 on the third team. Of the 33 all-League selections there are six seniors, 16 juniors, six sophomores, and five freshmen.
The Greyhounds led the way with 10 overall all-League selections, followed by Colgate with six and Lehigh with five. Army West Point and Boston University followed with three honorees each, while Navy earned two spots on the teams. American, Bucknell, Holy Cross and Lafayette each had one student-athletes receiving All-League recognition.
The major awards and All-Patriot League teams were voted on by the 10 Patriot League men’s soccer head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
2018 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Mark Forrest, Lehigh, Sr., F, Douglassville, Pa/The Hill School
*Forrest finished the regular season with eight goals and five assists for 21 points. The 21 points rank third in the League this season.
*He is the first Patriot League student-athlete since Bucknell’s Conor O’Brien (2008-09) to win the award in successive seasons.
*The preseason offensive player of the year has scored three game-winning goals this season.
2018 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
Barry Sharifi, Loyola Maryland, Jr., M, Jericho, N.Y./Jericho
*Sharifi added four goals and four assists to his stat sheet with one game-winning goal.
*The junior is the first two-time winner of Patriot League Midfielder of the Year Award (2017-18).
*The 2018 Patriot League Preseason Midfielder of the Year helped the Greyhounds’ offense finish first in the League in goals per game (2.00).
2018 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Aram Ouligian, Colgate, Sr., D, Needham, Mass./Needham
*The senior helped Colgate’s defense finish second in the League (0.67 goals per game).
*He is the first Raider since Zach Tamen, Jr. (2016) capture this award.
*Ouligian scored one goal early in the season against Albany in the team’s 2-1 win.
2018 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Chase Vosvick, Loyola Maryland, So., GK, Phoenix, Md./Montverde Academy
*In 15 games started the sophomore has earned a 0.70 goals-against average, which is second in the League.
*Vosvick has earned a 0.788 save percentage with 41 total saves.
*He is the first League goalkeeper since Army West Point’s Winston Boldt (2013-14) to win the honor two years in a row.
*The sophomore recorded seven shutouts in 2018 to land in third in the League.
2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year
Jacob Williams, Navy, Fr., F, Millersville, Md./ Old Mill
*In his freshman campaign as a Midshipmen, Williams has netted eight goals and started in 16 games.
*Three out of his eight goals were game-winning goals, with all three happening in the last three of four games of the regular-season schedule.
*In shots per game, Williams ranks fourth with a 2.94 mark, while in goals per game he is tied in second with 0.50.
2018 Patriot League Coach of the Year
Steve Nichols, Loyola Maryland
*In his fifth season at the helm of the Greyhounds, Nichols has guided his team to back-to-back Patriot League Men’s Soccer Regular-Season Championships and the top seed in the League tournament.
*Nichols is the first coach named Patriot League Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year in three-straight years.
*This year’s Greyhounds lead the League and rank 14th in the NCAA with a 2.07 goals per game average, 17th in points per game (6.13), 19th in corner kicks per game (6.13) and 20th in assists per game (2.00).
