Patriot League Announces Football Players of the Week (9.24.18)
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Colgate’s convincing 45-0 victory over Lafayette on Saturday helped the team claim two weekly awards, as senior running back James Holland Jr. was named the Patriot League Football Offensive Player of the Week and junior defensive back/punt returner Abu Daramy-Swaray was selected as the special teams player of the week, when weekly honors were announced on Monday.
Holland earned his second offensive player of the week honor this season after scoring twice and rushing for 98 yards, while Daramy-Swaray picked up his first special teams player of the week honor after returning a punt 77 yards for a touchdown.
Crusaders’ senior linebacker Ryan Brady was named the Patriot League Football Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season after registering a career-high 17 tackles. Fordham freshman quarterback Tim DeMorat picked up his first rookie of the week honor, passing for 184 yards and one touchdown in a loss to Central Connecticut State.
Georgetown senior wide receiver Brandon Williams and senior defensive back Blaise Brown, along with Bucknell senior punter Alex Pechin all earned weekly honorable mentions.
The Patriot League football players of the week were selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
James Holland Jr., Colgate, Sr., RB, Royal Palms Beach, Fla./The Kings Academy
*Holland rushed for 98 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns in Colgate’s 45-0 win over Lafayette.
*The senior running back averaged 7.0 yards per carry in the victory with a long run of 23 yards.
*Holland added two receptions for nine yards, giving him 107 all-purpose yards.
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ryan Brady, Holy Cross, Sr., LB, Plymouth Meeting, Pa./La Salle
*Brady finished with a career-high 17 tackles, including 12 solo stops against Dartmouth.
*The senior linebacker added 1.0 tackle for a loss of one yard.
*Brady has double-digit tackles in each of the Crusaders games this season.
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Abu Daramy-Swaray, Colgate, Jr., DB/PR, Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South
*Daramy-Swaray returned a punt 77 yards for his first career touchdown in a 45-0 victory over Lafayette on Saturday.
*Daramy-Swaray’s punt return for a touchdown was the Raiders’ first in 20 years.
*The junior defensive back/punt returner also intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 32 yards.
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Tim DeMorat, Fordham, Fr., QB, Merritt Island, Fla./Viera
*DeMorat completed 17-of-27 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in Fordham’s 24-13 loss to Central Connecticut State.
*He threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Searight in the second quarter.
*DeMorat also gained 41 yards on 15 rush attempts.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Brandon Williams, Georgetown, Sr., WR, Germantown, Md./Northwest
*Williams recorded career-highs in receptions (7) and receiving yards (121) while scoring his first touchdown since 2016 in a 23-15 loss to Columbia.
Blaise Brown, Georgetown, Jr., DB, New Orleans, La./Loomis Chaffee
*Brown finished with a career-high 14 tackles and helped the Hoyas limit Columbia to just 119 yards of total offense in the second half.
Alex Pechin, Bucknell, Sr., P, Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville
*Pechin averaged a career-high 51.0 yards per punt on nine attempts against No. 14/15 Villanova. He landed four punts inside the opposing 20-yard line while booting five for more than 50 yards.
