Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (2.19.19)


CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Army West Point sophomore first baseman Anthony Giachin was named the Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week, while Navy senior right-handed pitcher Noah Song claimed pitcher of the week and Lehigh freshman designated hitter Casey Rother earned rookie of the week when the League office announced the first round of weekly awards on Tuesday.
 
Giachin, the 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and League championship MVP, batted .429 (6-for-14) with one home run and 11 RBIs during the opening weekend of play. He earns his first career player of the week honor and fourth League weekly honor after being the rookie of the week three times in 2018.
 
Song picked up his fifth career Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and 10th weekly honor after striking out 12 Gardner-Webb batters over 5.2 three-hit, shutout innings in a no-decision.
 
Rother went 4-for-8 at the plate during his first two collegiate games against Duke. The freshman DH is currently leading the Mountain Hawks hitting .500 through the opening weekend.
 
Army West Point senior RHP Daniel Burggraaf, Bucknell junior outfielder JohnPaul Bell and Holy Cross sophomore catcher Zach Buck were selected as weekly honorable mentions.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Anthony Giachin, Army West Point, So., 1B, Livingston, N.J./Newark Academy
*Giachin batted .429 (6-for-14) while slugging .857 and reaching base at a .500 clip during a 1-2 opening weekend that included a victory over Air Force.
*The 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year drove in 11 runs on three doubles and one home run while scoring four times.
*Giachin went 5-for-5 with two doubles, one home run, four runs scored and eight RBIs in a 17-2 win over Air Force in the season opener.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Noah Song, Navy, Sr., RHP, Claremont, Calif./Claremont
*Song pitched 5.2 innings of three-hit, shutout ball while striking out 12 and walking four in a no-decision against Gardner-Webb.
*The senior right-hander held Gardner-Webb hitters to a .150 batting average and is now 21 strikeouts shy of reaching 300 career strikeouts.
*Song earns his fifth-career Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honor and 10th weekly honor after being a five-time rookie of the week in 2016.  
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Casey Rother, Lehigh, Fr., DH, Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area
*Rother batted .500 (4-for-8) with one run scored and one RBI during the Mountain Hawks’ three-game series against Duke.
*The freshman designated hitter went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in during the final game of the series with the Blue Devils on Sunday.
*Rother is leading Lehigh in batting while also slugging .500 with a .500 on-base percentage in two games played.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
JohnPaul Bell, Bucknell, Jr., OF, Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown
*Bell batted .308 (4-for-13) with one home run and six RBIs while .538 slugging percentage and .308 on-base percentage in three games against No. 21 NC State.
*The junior outfielder went 3-for-5 with one home run and five RBIs in the series finale on Sunday.
 
Daniel Burggraaf, Army West Point, Sr., RHP, Allyn, Wash./North Mason
*Burggraaf pitched 6.1 innings while allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits in a no-decision against No. 1 LSU. Burggraaf struck out five and walked one.
*The senior right-hander held the Tigers offense to a .182 batting average.
 
Zach Buck, Holy Cross, So.., C/DH, Ashburn, Va./Broad Run
*Buck batted .357 (5-for-14) with two runs and two RBIs while slugging .429 and reaching base at a .400 clip during the Crusaders' weekend series against No. 15 Baylor.
*The sophomore catcher turned in a pair of multi-hit games, going 4-for-9 during Saturday’s doubleheader.
