Patriot League Men’s Basketball Tournament Field Set; Regular-Season Finale Recaps (3.2.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Patriot League men’s basketball regular season concluded on Saturday with Colgate defeating Lafayette, 76-70, to claim the No. 1 seed in the 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championships. Bucknell recorded 62-61 comeback victory over Army West Point to earn the second seed in the tournament.
 
The Raiders and Bison finished with identical 13-5 League records, the first time two teams have tied atop the standings since 2006-07. Colgate and Bucknell split the regular-season series, but the Raiders captured the top-seed in the tournament due to a tiebreaker.
 
Lehigh fell to Loyola Maryland and will be the third seed while No. 4 American clinched the last quarterfinal round home game with an 86-66 win at Holy Cross. Navy clinched the fifth seed in the tournament with a 79-74 victory over Boston University and Army West Point will be the sixth seed to claim a first-round bye. The Mountain Hawks will host the Black Knights and American welcomes Navy on Thursday, March 7 in the quarterfinal round.
 
No. 7 Lafayette hosts No. 10 Holy Cross and No. 8 Boston University welcomes No. 9 Loyola Maryland in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, March 5. Both games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff on the Patriot League Network (PLN).

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior guard Kimbal Mackenzie made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Bison to a 62-61 victory over Army West Point to clinch the No. 2 seed in the 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Tournament.
*Bucknell trailed by as 14 points at the 8:53 mark in the second half, but Mackenzie and freshman guard Andrew Funk combined for 15 points during the final eight minutes to lead the comeback effort.
*Funk scored a team-high 17 points off the bench, Mackenzie added 15 points and senior forward Nate Sestina posted his 10th double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
*Army West Point junior center Matt Wilson scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.
*Junior guard Tommy Funk finished with 10 points and five assists for the Black Knights and is four points shy of becoming the eighth student-athlete in Patriot League history to accumulate 1,000 points and 500 assists.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior guard Sa’eed Nelson scored a game-high 21 points in addition to eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals to lead American to an 86-66 victory over Holy Cross.
*The Eagles clinch the fourth seed and a quarterfinal home game in the 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Tournament.
*Nelson shot 8-of-11 from the floor to lead a hot-shooting Eagles’ squad that connected on 58.9 percent (33-of-56) of its field goal attempts.
* American shot 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from 3-point range as freshman guard Jacob Boonyasith finished with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc and sophomore forward Sam Iorio tallied 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep.
*Sophomore guard Stacy Beckton Jr. and senior guard Larry Motuzis finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
*Holy Cross senior forward Jehyve Floyd led four Crusaders in double figures with 19 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists, two steals and six blocked shots. Floyd finishes the regular season with a league-leading 76 blocked shots.
*Crusaders’ sophomores Caleb Green (15 points), Jacob Grandison (14) and Austin Butler (10) all finished in double figures.

EASTON, Pa. – Junior forward Will Rayman connected on a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left in the game put Colgate in front for good on their way to a 76-70 victory over Lafayette.
*The Raiders’ win clinches the No. 1 seed in the 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Tournament, the first time they have claimed the top seed since the 1995-96 season.
*Junior forward Rapolas Ivanauskas led four Raiders in double figures with 15 points while senior center Dana Batt added 12 and senior forward Malcolm Regisford and sophomore guard Jack Ferguson scored 11 apiece.
*The Raiders trailed 31-26 at halftime before outscoring the Leopards 50-39 in the second half behind 21 combined second-half points from Ivanauskas and Batt.
*Sophomore guard Justin Jaworski led Lafayette with a game-high 21 points while senior forward Paulius Zalys and sophomore guard Alex Petrie both scored 16 points.
*Sophomore guard E.J. Stephens scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.

BOSTON – Freshman guard John Carter Jr. went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 1:03 to help Navy hold off a late Boston University rally to capture a 79-74 win at Case Gym.
*The Midshipmen victory clinches a first-round bye and the No. 5 seed in the 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Tournament. 
*Carter Jr. and junior center Evan Wieck scored 15 points apiece to lead the Mids and senior guard Hasan Abdullah finished with seven points and nine assists.
*Boston University forward Tyler Scanlon scored a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds, six assists and two steals while junior forward Max Mahoney added 14 points.
*The Terriers trailed by 17 points with 4:54 left in regulation but closed the gap to three points during a 22-9 run, capped by 3-pointers from Scanlon, sophomore guard Andrew Petcash and freshman guard Jonas Harper.
*Navy held off the surging Terriers by going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line during the final 1:03 of play.

*Junior guard Andrew Kostecka finished with 19 points, sophomore guard Isaiah Hart had 18 points and seven assists and freshman guard Kenny Jones added 15 points for Loyola Maryland.
*Freshman guard Casmir Ochiaka registered his third career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
*Lehigh senior guard Kyle Leufroy and junior guard Jordan Cohen scored 16 points apiece to lead the Mountain Hawks in the losing effort.
*Freshman center Nic Lynch posted his third career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and senior guard Lance Tejada chipped in 14 points.
