Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (3.26.19)


CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lafayette captured two of the three Patriot League Baseball Weekly Awards when the League office announced honors on Tuesday.
 
Lafayette junior left fielder Trey Durrah claimed his first Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week honor, after he batted .500 (8-for-16) with three home runs and 15 RBIs to help Lafayette go 3-2 last week, including going 3-1 against rival Lehigh. Leopards’ freshman shortstop Justin Johnson picked up his second rookie of the week award, as he hit .381 (8-for-21), slugged .524 and posted a .435 on-base percentage.
 
Holy Cross sophomore right-handed pitcher Liam Dvorak earned his first Patriot League Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor after tossing a career-best 8.0 innings of shutout baseball to earn a victory against Navy. The Bayport, N.Y. native tied a career-high with seven strikeouts.
 
Army West Point senior LHP Tyler Giovinco, Bucknell sophomore RHP Nate Grisius, Holy Cross sophomore second baseman Peter Dudunakis, Lehigh junior infielder Tony Gallo and Navy senior RHP Noah Song were selected as weekly honorable mentions.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL UPCOMING GAMES (How to Watch)
The six Patriot League baseball teams will combine to play seven games on Tuesday and Wednesday, before a full slate of League games this weekend. Lafayette hosts Navy for a four-game series between a pair of teams atop the League standings. Bucknell welcomes Army West Point for a four-game series and Holy Cross hosts Lehigh in a three-game series with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday. PATRIOT LEAGUE STUDENT-ATHLETES AMONG NCAA DI LEADERS
*Navy senior RHP Noah Song leads NCAA DI in strikeouts (78), strikeouts per nine innings (17.70) and is among the nation’s leaders in ERA (61st, 1.59).
*Song, Army West Point senior LHP Tyler Giovinco and Black Knights’ senior RHP Sam Messina are tied for 29th in the nation with four wins apiece.
*Lehigh senior outfielder Ryan Malloy (37th, .408) is among the nation’s leaders in batting average while placing 10th in the nation with an .803 slugging percentage and 53rd with a .500 on-base percentage.
*Lafayette junior outfielder Trey Durrah is 61st in NCAA DI with 1.15 RBIs per game while Malloy (85th, 1.10) is also in the top-100 NCAA DI players in RBIs per game.
*Army West Point junior outfielder Jacob Hurtubise is 15th in the nation averaging 0.74 stolen bases per game.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Trey Durrah, Lafayette, Jr., OF, Easton, Pa./Easton
*Durrah batted .500 (8-for-16) with three home runs and 15 RBIs to help Lafayette go 3-2 last week, including going 3-1 against rival Lehigh.
*The junior left fielder slugged 1.188 and reached base at a .619 clip. He had a grand slam, a three-run and two-run home run in addition to two doubles during the week.
*Durrah highlighted his week with a 3-for-4 performance with eight RBIs, a single-game record for the Leopards in the Patriot League era.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Liam Dvorak, Holy Cross, So., RHP, Bayport, N.Y./Chaminade
*Dvorak logged 8.0 shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out seven to earn a victory against Navy.
*The sophomore right-hander exceeded his previous career high of six innings pitched, and matched his career high with seven strikeouts.
*Dvorak improved to 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA in six starts this season.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Justin Johnson, Lafayette, Fr., SS, Glen Gardner, N.J./North Hunterdon
*Johnson batted .381 (8-for-21) while slugging .524 and posting a .435 on-base percentage during the Leopards 3-2 week.
*The freshman shortstop doubled three times, walked twice, stole two bases and scored four runs while batting at the top of the Leopards’ batting order.
*He was errorless while playing every inning at shortstop to go along with 11 assists and seven putouts last week.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Tyler Giovinco, Army West Point, Sr., LHP, Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron-Memorial
*Giovinco earned his fourth win of the year with a 7.0 inning complete-game against Bucknell. He allowed one unearned run and struck out six, while scattering five hits.
 
Nate Grisius, Bucknell, Jr., RHP, Vienna, Va./Gonzaga
*Grisius earned a win against Army West Point by tossing 7.0 shutout innings, while allowing two hits and striking out four.
 
Peter Dudunakis, Holy Cross, So., 2B, Seattle, Wash./Overlake
*Dudunakis batted .500 (8-for-16) with six runs and three RBIs while slugging .563 and reaching base at a .636 clip.
 
Tony Gallo, Lehigh, Jr., 1B/2B, Newtown Square, Pa./Devon Prep
*Gallo batted .421 (8-for-19) with six runs and six RBIs during a six-game week. He slugged .526 with a .500 on-base percentage.
