MONTREAL, Quebec - Army trackster Clay Schwabe continues to write headlines, the latest after shining in the 800,
1500 and mile during various meets competing on the CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit that concluded Tuesday
evening in the province of Quebec.
The CanAm High Performance Distance Circuit was developed in 1998 to provide low-cost, high-performance
competition opportunities for North America's elite and emerging elite middle-distance and distance runners during the
summer months following the national championship meets.
After turning in a personal best time of 1:49.53 to finish seventh in the 800-meter run at the CanAm II in Boston, Mass.,
Schwabe broke his school outdoor mile mark in his winning effort at the CanAm III in Brunswick, Maine, held over the
weekend. He outkicked Jason Lunn at the finish line in a school record time of 3:58.91, breaking his former mark of
3:59.43 recorded at the Golden Spike Tour Open in May. He is just the second sub-four-minute miler and first outdoors in
school history.
Schwabe turned in another winning effort in Canada Tuesday evening, this time in the 1500 when he edged prep sub-four-miler Nathan Brannen by a hundredth of a second in clocking a 3:41.79. Prior to the tour, Schwabe,
an All-American in the 1500, broke the school mark in that event in clocking a 3:38.50 in a sixth-place finish at the USA
Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"Clay has excelled on the tournament circuit this summer," said head coach Jerry Quiller. "He is just a step away from
being an international runner.
"He has a great senior year ahead of him. Next on his agenda is cross country in the fall. Hopefully he will be one of the
top runners in the district, and that in turn will help prepare him for winter and spring track."
