Sept. 29, 2001
Senior Mark Carney (Lakewood, OH/St. Edward's) completed 22 of 33 passes for 368 yards and a school-record five touchdowns while Javarus Dudley (Hollywood, FL/American Heritage) caught eight passes for a career-high 188 yards and three touchdowns, to tie a school record, to lead Fordham University (2-1, 1-1) to a 48-13 Patriot League win over Georgetown University (0-3, 0-3) on Jack Coffey Field.
The five touchdown passes for Carney breaks the school record of four held by four players, most recently by Gary Brennan against Hofstra in 1991. Carney did most of his damage in the first half, completing 17 of 22 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns in the first 30 minutes.
The three touchdown passes by Dudley ties a school record held by three others, the last being Gerry McDermott who hauled in three touchdown passes against both Penn and Brown in 1998.
The Rams took the opening kickoff and drove 73 yards on eight plays with Carney completing four of six passes on the drive for 54 yards, including a 30-yard scoring strike to Alemayo Whyte with 12:08 left to put the Rams up 7-0.
But the Hoyas came right back, driving 78 yards on only three plays, the big play a 44-yard rush by Dawon Dicks, which was also aided by a face mask penalty on Fordham, to put the ball on the Fordham 14. On the next play Sean Peterson hit Bo Cote with a 14-yard touchdown pass to even the score at seven with 11:36 left in the quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Dudley returned the ball 59 yards to the Georgetown 36 where the Rams took just three plays to score, capped by a 32-yard strike from Carney to Dudley to put Fordham up 14-7 with 10:09 left in the first.
On their next possession the Rams drove from their own 20 to the Georgetown 15 where Brian Colsant connected on his first field goal of the season, a 32-yarder, to put the Rams up 17-7 with 3:09 left in the quarter.
The Rams then held the Hoyas on a fourth-and-two from the Fordham 39 and it took just one play, a 61-yard bomb from Carney to Dudley, to give the Rams a 24-7 lead with 14:41 left in the second.
The score stood until Akeem Greenfield (Tustin, CA/Tustin) forced Georgetown's Bo Cote to fumble on the Georgetown 43. Carney then found Dudley down the sideline with a 43-yard touchdown pass and the Rams led 31-7 with 5:20 left in the half.
Fordham took a 38-7 halftime lead when Aseer Clay ran in from the 11 with 46 seconds left in the half.
Georgetown threatened in the second half with Matt Fronczyke picking off a Carney pass early and giving the Hoyas the ball on their own 45. Peterson then led the Hoyas downfield, completing three of four passes for 46 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Trenton Hillier with 8:49 left in the third, to cut the deficit to 38-13.
On Fordham's next possession, Ryan Cooper intercepted a Carney pass and returned it to the Fordham 28. But the Hoyas tried a trick play with Dicks taking a handoff and attempting a pass into the endzone but it was picked off by Gerome Robinson for Fordham.
Fordham closed out the scoring with a field goal and a touchdown in the fourth. Colsant connected on his second field goal of the game, a 26-yarder, with 8:37 left and then Carney threw for his fifth touchdown of the game, a 33-yarder to Peter Modelski, with 5:36 left.
Kirwin Watson led all rushers with eleven carries for 80 yards for the Rams. Peterson finished the game completing 23 of 32 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns for Georgetown while Cote caught seven passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively for the Rams Greenfield, last week's Patriot League Rookie of the Week, made a game-high 11 tackles, seven solo and two for a loss, and he forced a fumble. Brad Fradenburg made ten stops for the Rams, five solo, while Robinson finished with eight tackles, two for a loss, and he had two pass break-ups and the interception.
