The Colgate University athletic department has
announced that on February 9th, it will retire the uniform number of former
star player Adonal Foyle, who is currently playing for the Golden State
Warriors in the National Basketball Association.
Foyle will return to campus for the ceremony which will take place prior to
the Colgate vs. Holy Cross game. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
Foyle will become the fourth player in Colgate history to have his
basketball number retired. He played three seasons with the Raiders between
1995-97 leading Colgate to its only two appearances ever in the NCAA
Tournament while earning second team All-America honors by the U.S.
Basketball Writers Association and third team All-America by Associated
Press in 1997.
"I am really pleased that Adonal is returning to campus to have his jersey
retired," stated Colgate Athletics Director Mark Murphy. "He had a
tremendous career here and continues to be a great role model for all
student athletes nationally. While he was at Colgate, Adonal brought great
publicity to Colgate both as a student and an athlete, and showed that you
can excel athletically at the highest level without sacrificing academics."
"It will be a special day on the Colgate campus," added head basketball
coach Emmett Davis. "Adonal's impact on Colgate basketball has been
dramatic. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the speed with which he
completed his degree after leaving Colgate for the NBA. We are all very
happy and proud to honor Adonal with the permanent retirement of his number
and we hope Colgate fans will join us for the ceremony on Feb. 9th."
Foyle finished his collegiate career as Colgate's second all-time leading
scorer with 1,776 points and leading rebounder with 1,103. The two-time
Patriot League Player of the Year is the NCAA all-time blocked shot leader
with 492.
In his last season with the Raiders, Foyle was a finalist for The John R.
Wooden and USBWA Player of the Year honors. He was the eighth pick overall
in the 1997 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. He is currently playing
his fifth season in the NBA.
Foyle was also a top-notch student-athlete earning first team
University-Division GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 1997. He was
the 1996 Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
