ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Lane Schwarzberg kicked a 22-yard field goal with no
time left on the clock to lead Colgate over Cornell 27-24 Saturday.
Schwarzberg's field goal ended a comeback effort by the Big Red, which
trailed 24-7 at the half. Cornell (1-2) made it a 24-24 tie with 6:32 remaining
on a 24-yard field goal by A.J. Weitsman, capping a 17-point second half for
the Big Red.
Joshua Johnston's 59-yard touchdown gave Cornell an early 7-0 lead. But
Colgate (5-0) answered by scoring 24 straight points, including back-to-back
touchdowns by Jamaal Branch that made it 14-7. Chris Brown scored on a 3-yard
run and Schwarzberg kicked a 28-yard field goal to put the Raiders ahead 24-7.
Cornell's rally began in the third quarter, when Anthony Jackson scored on a
15-yard pass from Mick Razzano. Sean Nassoiy scored on a 38-yard fumble
recovery.
Branch led the Raiders with 226 yards and 34 carries. Brown was 19-of-31
passing for 215 yards. Colgate had 506 yards of total offense and had a nearly
17-minute advantage in time of possession.
Johnston led Cornell with 12 carries for 109 yards. Razzano completed
14-of-25 passes for 171 yards and rushed for 31 yards on four carries. Neil
Morrissey recorded 24 tackles for the Big Red.
