Colgate University senior tight end John Frieser (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell H.S.) has been named first team Academic All-America as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Frieser is the fourth player in school history to earn first team honors. The last player was tight end Jeremy Garvey in 1989.
To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
Frieser is the 20th player to earn Academic All-America recognition in the 18-year history of the Patriot League, and 11th to earn a berth on the first team.
This is Frieser's second major academic honor this fall. Earlier he was named one of 15 recipients to receive the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Frieser has started all 13 games for Colgate's undefeated and nationally ranked football team. He has 23 catches for 308 yards and four touchdowns, and his blocking skills have helped Colgate average 228.0 yards rushing per game. During his career, he has caught 62 passes for 915 yards and nine touchdowns.
He is a Sociology and Anthropology major with a 3.69 grade point average.
