CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Regular season champion American placed a League-best six players on the 2004 Field Hockey All-League teams, with three on the first and three on the second. Colgate and Holy Cross lay claim to five student-athletes a piece on the list, each with three players on the first team and two student-athletes on the second. Bucknell finishes up the regular season with four All-Leaguers, while Lehigh and Lafayette, each have three.
American's All-League first team members include juniors Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Javiera Villagra, (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) and sophomore Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College). Daniel moves up from her second team honor a year ago for her contributions to the Eagles offense. The all-star forward racked up 18 points, netting six goals and chipping in six helpers. Villagra repeats as a first team member with 16 points this season on seven goals and two assists. Villagra is one of seven PL players to post six points in one game this season with six against Massachusetts on Sept. 12. Infante, the 2003 PL Rookie of the Year, posted a team-leading 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists this season. The Oct. 25 PL Offensive Player of the Week has netted three game-winning goals for the Eagles. The sophomore attacker ranks second in the League in points, third in points per game (1.89) and
goals and fourth in goals per game (0.72).
Headlining the All-League first team for Colgate are seniors Ashley Schneider (Linfield, Pa./Hill School) and Kath Shelley (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Maumee Valley) and sophomore Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Schneider recorded 35 points on 16 goals, four of which were game-winners, and added in three assists. The two-time all-star lead the League in points (35), points per game (1.94), goals (16), and goals per game (0.89). The forward, who was named Offensive Player of the Week three times this season, appears in the national rankings in goals and goals per game, tied for 19th in both categories. Shelley, a two-time All-League performer, is the League leader in assists (12) and assists per game (0.67). The senior midfielder is tied at 13th in assists per game and is tied for 14th in assists among NCAA Division I schools. DeMarco, the Raiders' netminder, has blanked four opponents this season and has held League foes to only 10 goals this year in 350 minutes of play. The three-time PL Defensive Player of the Week is tops in the League in saves per game (8.72) and ranks second in both saves with 157 and save percentage (.818).
Holy Cross inks a trio of student-athletes on this year's first team in junior Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and seniors Cat Kerman (Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls) and Caitlin Moynihan (Rye, N.Y./Rye). Cook leads the Crusaders attack with 32 points via 12 goals, three of which were game-winners, and eight assists. The 2003 first teamer stands among League leaders in eight different categories, with her top ranking third in points, assists and shots per game. Kerman has been a leader on the Crusaders' defensive unit which ranks 19th in the nation with a 1.35 goals against average. She netted two goals and added three assists in 2004 and was rewarded for her efforts with the third All-League mention of her career. Moynihan picks up her first career All-League honor as a standout member of the HC defense as well. She has played in every one of the Crusaders' games this year.
This year's No. 4 seed in the PL tournament, Lehigh, grabbed the last two first league spots. Seniors Sheila Clabby (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown) and Krista Jamieson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) are both honored for the first time in their collegiate careers. Clabby has 18 points on eight goals and two assists, while Jamieson ended the regular season with a team-best nine helpers, which ties her for second and third in the League in assists and assists per game (0.50), respectively.
Second teamers junior Heather Maranzano (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and freshmen Maggie Hall (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) and Denise Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) complete the 2004 AU All-League unit. Maranzano ranks among League leaders for her seven assists on the year. The first-time All-Leaguer added two scores to bring her point total to 11. Hall, who was named PL Rookie of the Week twice this year, concluded the regular season with 12 goals, including three game-winning tallies. The freshman forward ranks among League leaders in shots (67), shots per game (3.72), points (24), points per game (1.33), goals and goals per game (0.67). Infante registered 21 points via nine goals and three assists on her way to claiming three PL Rookie of the Week honors. The freshman defender notched a trio of game-winning tallies on the year, including the winning goal in the 2-1 overtime victory to No. 20 Syracuse on Oct. 24.
All four of the Bison's honorees this year were second team members. Junior Liz Jordan (Towson, Md./St. Paul's) is the only Bucknell player to repeat as an All-Leaguer, having claimed second team honors in 2003. Jordan boasted a .752 save percentage and inked two shutouts. The Bison goalie stands at sixth in the nation in saves with 161. Sophomore Alex Kyzmir (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) is the team's point leader with the eighth-best total in the League at 22 (seven goals, eight assists). Sophomore Callista Costopoulos (Shermans Dale, Pa./West Perry) has five goals, including one game-ender, and four assists, while senior Corin Inderbitzin-Brooks, (Springfield, Va./Annandale) has been a consistent defender for BU.
Colgate's All-League team is completed by the naming of senior Courtney Collins (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) and junior Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Hill School) to the second team, who each contributed seven points to the Raider attack.
Two of the League's standout players were enlisted to the All-League second team for Holy Cross. Junior Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), the cog to the Crusaders defense, leads the League in shutouts with eight and in save percentage (.830). The two-time PL Defensive Player of the Week ranks third nationally in save percentage, the best individual showing for the League. Kuhn also appears on the national scene at 19th in goals against average (1.31). Sophomore Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area) has 14 goals and three helpers on the season for a combined 31 points. Welch has also chipped in three game-winning tallies
The Leopards have three representatives, all second team members, on this year's All-League list. Senior Missy Farrand (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) takes home her first All-League honors for her team-leading 14 points on five goals and four assists. Joining Farrand is juniors Amanda Eggleston (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), who totaled 10 points (four goals and two assists), and Jenna Bratz (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who finished the season with five points (two goals and one assist).
Lehigh's lone second team member is junior defender MaryBeth Kuenne (Holmdel, N.J./St. John's Vianney), the Mountain Hawks leading scorer with 19 points on nine goals and one helper.
