LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head football coach Tim Landis announced today the promotion of assistant coach Tim Camp to the offensive coordinator position. Camp joined the Bison staff in 2003 and served as offensive line coach last season.
Landis also announced that assistant coach Brent Thompson will coach the offensive backs this season. Landis is currently working to fill one additional spot on his staff for next Fall.
Camp steps into the offensive coordinator role replacing Ian Shields, who accepted a coaching position at Cal Poly in February. Camp will direct Bucknell's spread option offense, which led the Patriot League and ranked 10th nationally in rushing offense at 242.3 yards per game last fall.
As offensive line coach, Camp successfully molded a unit that featured several new faces. He helped Rashad Stallworth earn All-Patriot League honors for the second straight year, despite a move from tackle to guard. Camp also helped sophomore Stephen Watts, a first-year starter, develop into one of the league's top young linemen.
"To me Tim was a natural choice to become offensive coordinator," said Landis. "He has been involved with this type of offense as both a player at Oregon State and throughout his coaching career. What we do is so unique, and we were extremely fortunate to have someone with a complete understanding of the offense already on our staff. Tim is simply a commodity that we had to take advantage of."
Camp came to Bucknell last June after previously serving as offensive line and tight ends coach at Nebraska-Omaha. A 1996 graduate of Oregon State, he was a four-year starter and All-Pac-10 honoree for the Beavers. A Morris Trophy nominee, Camp spent one season with the NFL's San Diego Chargers after graduation.
Camp served as offensive line coach at Western Oregon in 1996 before moving to the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., in 1997. He spent five seasons there as offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator, and in 2000 he was promoted to offensive coordinator. Camp also spent one spring as offensive coordinator at Randolph-Macon before moving on to UNO.
Like Camp, Thompson arrived last season at the start of the Tim Landis era at Bucknell. Thompson coached the Bison receivers, helping senior Albert Marquardt continue his ascent among the all-time pass-catching leaders at Bucknell.
Thompson is a 1998 Norwich graduate who coached the running backs at Northeastern for two seasons prior to coming to Bucknell. He also coached at Dickinson and Stony Brook after earning two letters as a defensive back at Norwich.
Bucknell's spring practice session opened on Tuesday and will culminate with the annual Orange-Blue Spring Game on April 24 at 7 p.m. The Bison open their 2004 season at Villanova on Thursday, Sept. 2.
