Patriot League Football Saturday Recap (10.29.16)

Mountain Hawks, Leopards and Raiders all earn victories

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lehigh posted its best rushing day in the Andy Coen era, totaling 349 yards on the ground, led by a career-high 192 from sophomore running back Dom Bragalone, the defending Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, to defeat Fordham 58-37. The game saw the Mountain Hawks and Rams combine for 1,119 yards of total offense, while the nation’s leading rusher Fordham junior Chase Edmonds carried the ball 24 times for 182 yards.
 
Bucknell hung with No. 9 Charleston Southern into the third quarter, trailing 28-21, before the Buccaneers offense scored twice to end the third quarter to open its largest lead of the day at 42-21. Defending Patriot League Rookie of the Week Chad Freshnock rushed for two touchdowns in the loss.
 
Lafayette snapped a seven-game losing streak, as senior quarterback Drew Reed and sophomore running back Tyler West each rushed for third quarter touchdowns in a 17-3 win over Georgetown.
 
Colgate’s defense held Holy Cross to just 21 rushing yards – the second-consecutive game they’ve held an opponent under 30-rushing yards – and scored a defensive touchdown in a 26-8 victory over Holy Cross. It was the Raiders second-straight Patriot League win.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior quarterback R.J. Nitti completed 18-of-29 pass attempts for 154 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bucknell offense, but the Bison fell to No. 9/9 Charleston Southern, 49-28 at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon.
*Nitti moved into third-place in Bucknell history with 4,885 career passing yards.
*Freshman running back Chad Freshnock scored two touchdowns, while rushing for 37 yards on 16 carries. Junior running back Joey DeFloria carried the ball 16 times for 48 yards.
*Junior safety Connor Golden had two interceptions with both leading to Bison touchdowns.
*The Bison scored first as Nitti found junior receiver Jack Horan on a ten-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Charleston Southern scored the next three touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead.
*Bucknell answered as Nitti found sophomore tight end Andrew Owers on a three-yard touchdown pass with 56 seconds left in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing, 21-14.
*Junior defensive end Trevor Fennimore recovered a CSU fumble near the goal line and Freshnock brought the Bison back within a touchdown, rushing into the end zone from two yards out to make the score 28-21.  
*Sophomore safety Joe Lauro had a team-high 10 tackles, while junior linebacker Ben Richard had nine.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh offense rushed for 349 yards, the most during Head Coach Andy Coen’s tenure, while scoring six touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore running back Dom Bragalone rushed for a career-high 192 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries, while senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky added 108 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.
*The Patriot League’s top two offenses combined for 1,119 total yards.
*Bragalone’s 192 rushing yards topped his previous best of 182 yards from last week’s win over Holy Cross.
*Shafnisky completed 10-of-18 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown pass in addition to his 112 rushing yards and three touchdown rushes in his return to action. Sophomore Brad Mayes completed his only pass attempt for a 29-yard touchdown.
*Senior receiver Derek Knott had 130 receiving yards on three catches, including an 84-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown reception was Lehigh’s longest play from scrimmage since 2008. Junior receiver Gatlin Casey had two catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
*Fordham junior running back Chase Edmonds rushed for 182 yards on 24 carries.
*Senior quarterback Kevin Anderson completed 21-of-33 passes for 285 yards and three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown in his return to action.
*The Mountain Hawks jumped out quickly behind a 19-yard touchdown from Bragalone and an 84-yard touchdown reception for Knott.
*Fordham cut the deficit to seven on Anderson’s three-yard touchdown run, making the score 13-6 in the first quarter.
*After a 24-yard field goal from Fordham’s Makay Redd, Lehigh scored five-consecutive touchdowns to take a 51-9 lead by the 8:23 mark in the third quarter.
*Fordham’s Kendal Pearcey scored on an 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Jorge Solano had a 39-yard touchdown reception from Anderson in the fourth. Anderson would throw touchdown passes to Isaia Searight and Robbi Cantelli in the fourth quarter.

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette senior quarterback Drew Reed and sophomore running back Tyler West each rushed four touchdowns in the third quarter to help the Leopards snap a seven-game losing streak, defeating Georgetown, 17-3 at Fisher Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
*Reed completed 18-of-28 passes for 245 yards, while West rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries to lead Lafayette’s offense.
*Leopards sophomore linebacker Jerry Powe led with the way with 12 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, while junior linebacker Rob Hinchen also had 12 tackles, with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack.
*Senior defensive back Draeland James had four tackles and one interception.
*Sophomore kicker Jacob Bissell put the Leopards on the scoreboard first with a 28-yard field goal at the 1:17 mark in the first quarter.
*Georgetown’s lone points came on senior kicker Henry Darmstadter’s 26-yard field goal in the second quarter. The field goal tied the game at 3-3, the score going into halftime.
*Hoyas freshman quarterback Brock Johnson completed 12-for-23 passes for 107 yards, while junior running back Alex Valles rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries.
*Sophomore safety Jethro Francois led the Hoyas with 10 tackles and 1.0 tackle for loss.
*Sophomore linebacker J’V’on Butler and sophomore defensive tackle Brennen Sawicki each finished with nine tackles.
*Senior defensive end Phil Novacki finished with 2.0 sacks, while freshman defensive lineman Khristian Tate blocked a punt, his third blocked kick of the season.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate’s defense held Holy Cross to just 21 rushing yards, while senior linebacker Charles Cairnie’s first quarter strip sack that led to junior defensive lineman Pat Afriyie’s recovery and touchdown set the tone in the Raiders 26-8 victory. Afriyie also had 1.5 sacks on the game.
*The Raiders held their opponent to under 30-yards rushing for the second consecutive game, after limiting Bucknell to 27 rushing yards.
*Sophomore defensive back Tyler Castillo led Colgate with 13 tackles.
*Quarterback Jake Melville three for 225 yards and rushed for 83 to lead Colgate’s offense. Senior receiver John Maddaluna III had six catches for 92 yards, while junior receiver Alex Greenwalt had four catches for 81 yards.
*The Colgate offense overcame four first half turnovers but outgaining Holy Cross, 408-201 on the day. The Raiders limited the Crusaders to 1-of-15 on third down conversions.
*Holy Cross got on the scoreboard with 35 seconds remaining in the game when freshman quarterback Emmett Clifford threw a five-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Brendan Flaherty. Clifford completed 8-of-17 passes for 93 yards, while Blaise Bell completed 15-of-22 for 87 yards.
*Senior receiver Jake Wieczorek led the Crusaders with seven catches for 60 yards. He finished with 173 all-purpose yards.
*Sophomore linebacker Andre Chevalier finished with nine tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.
*Senior linebacker Kyle Young finished with a game-high 12 tackles, 1.0 TFL, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and a blocked extra point. Senior safety Luke Ford also added an interception.
