Patriot League Football Corvias Players of the Week Announced (11.14.16)
Anderson, Field, Berg and Freshnock earn honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Fordham senior quarterback Kevin Anderson was selected as the Patriot League Football Corvias Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after passing for a career-high 426 yards and three touchdowns in the Rams win over Holy Cross in Saturday’s Ram-Crusader Cup at Yankee Stadium.
Colgate senior defensive tackle Brett Field earned his first Corvias Defensive Player of the Week honor, leading a dominant defensive effort from the Raiders with a career-high 3.0 sacks to go with six tackles.
Bucknell safety/punter Bret Berg earns his first Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week honor after averaging 41.3 yards per punt on six punt attempts, while placing two inside the 20-yard line at Georgetown. He also added 1.0 TFL and an interception in the victory. He is joined by teammate freshman running back Chad Freshnock who earns Corvias Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season, after rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown.
Colgate senior quarterback Jake Melville accounted for three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing to help the Raiders defeat Lafayette, while teammate freshman returner and defensive back Abu Daramy provided a spark in the return game and on defense to earn honorable mention.
Fordham linebacker George Dawson had six tackles, 1.0 sack and three pass breakups, while Georgetown sophomore linebacker J’V’on Butler had 11 tackles and a forced fumble to each earn honorable mention.
Corvias Offensive Player of the Week
Kevin Anderson, Fordham, Sr., QB, Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton
Anderson completed 28-of-34 passes, including his first 10 in a row for a career-high 426 passing yards and three touchdowns in Fordham’s 54-14 victory over Holy Cross in the Ram-Crusader Cup at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Anderson earns offense player of the week honors for the second time this season after recording his sixth game of the season with three touchdown passes or more. Anderson is now third in Fordham program history with 57 touchdown passes and fifth with 5,580 career passing yards.
Corvias Defensive Player of the Week
Brett Field, Colgate, Sr., DT, Durhamville, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill
Field finished with six tackles and a career-high 3.0 sacks for minus-22 yards in Colgate’s 38-17 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. This is Field’s first defensive player of the week honor this season. Field led a dominant Raider defensive effort, as the team had a season-high 7.0 sacks for minus-50 yards. Field and the Colgate defense has now held its last four opponents to under 65 rushing yards.
Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week
Bret Berg, Bucknell, Sr., S/P, Danville, Pa./Danville
Berg, who also starts for the Bison at safety, averaged 41.3 yards per punt on six attempts, while placing two inside the 20-yard line. This was Berg’s fourth game as the team’s starting punter, as he has averaged more than 40.0 yards per punt in each of those games. He is averaging 41.5 yards per punt on the season, currently second in Bucknell single-season history. On defense Berg also had six tackles, 1.0 TFL and one interception.
Corvias Rookie Player of the Week
Chad Freshnock, Bucknell, Sr., RB, Middletown, N.J./Middletown North
Freshnock rushed 13 times for 47 yards and scored one touchdown in Bucknell’s 21-7 victory over Georgetown on Saturday. Freshnock earns the honor for the third time this season, as he has now scored at least one rushing touchdown in his last four games, ranking fifth in the Patriot League with eight rushing touchdowns.
WEEKLY HONORABLE MENTION
Abu Daramy, Colgate, Fr., PR/KR/DB, Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South
Daramy earns a spot as a weekly honorable mention averaging 14.0 yard per punt return on four returns, including an 18-yarder that helped set up a Colgate touchdown. He also averaged 20.0 yards on two kickoff returns with a long of 26 yards. On defense Daramy had four tackles and one pass breakup in the secondary.
Jake Melville, Colgate, Sr., QB, Sparta, N.J./Sparta
Melville completed 15-of-23 passes for 202 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing for an additional 141 yards on 17 carries and one more score to help Colgate defeat Lafayette 38-17 on Saturday. Melville is 12-2 as a starter against Patriot League opponents.
George Dawson, Fordham, Sr., LB, Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes
Dawson finished with six tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 sack and three pass breakups to help Fordham defeat Holy Cross 54-14 in the Ram-Crusader Cup at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Dawson and the Fordham defense held the Crusaders to minus-five rushing yards on the game.
J’V’on Butler, Georgetown, So., LB, Melbourne, Fla./Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy
Butler tied a career-high with 11 tackles, the fourth time this season he has reached the mark. He also forced a fumble that was recovered by the Hoyas in the fourth quarter. Butler and the Hoyas defense held Bucknell to just 109 yards passing and under 300 yards of total offense.
