Ally Hammel Earns First Team NFHCA All-America Honors; Boston University Coaching Staff Recognized

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The postseason accolades continue to roll in for Patriot League Champion Boston University field hockey team, with the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announcing its All-America teams and regional coaching major awards this week.

ALLY HAMMEL NAMED NFHCA DIVISION I FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICAN
Boston University junior defender Ally Hammel – the 2017 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year - was named a Longstreth/NFHCA Division I First-Team All-American. She is the seventh Patriot League student-athlete to earn First-Team All-America honors and first since the Terriers’ Sofi Laurito accomplished the feat in 2015. Hammel also became the first Terriers’ player to earn NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year honors when it was announced last week. This season the Duxbury, Mass. native finished with five goals and one assist, while leading a Terriers’ back line that limited opponents to 1.72 goals per game. Boston University allowed just four goals during six League games on the way to winning the regular-season title, the Patriot League Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY EARNS NFHCA COLLEGIATE REGIONAL COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR FOR THE NORTHEAST
Head coach Sally Starr and her Boston University coaching staff received the 2017 NFHCA Collegiate Regional Coaching Staff of the Year for the Northeast. This is the third time that Starr has garnered an NFHCA regional coaching award. She was named NFHCA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007, prior to the award being renamed to recognize entire staffs this year. Starr, along with associate head coach Sarah Shute, assistant coach Tracey Paul and volunteer assistant Niklas Wellen guided the Terriers’ to a 14-8 record, including 6-0 in Patriot League play. BU claimed its third League championship in four years and the program’s 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.
