Former Navy Track Athlete Kayla Barron Selected to 2017 NASA Astronaut Candidate Class

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Former Navy cross country and track & field student-athlete Kayla (Sax) Barron has been selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. Barron will report for duty in August 2017.  
 
Barron, a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection (2008-2010), earned First Team Indoor All-League honors in 2009 as part of the Mids’ winning distance medley relay. The Richland, Washington native was also a 2009 Second Team All-Patriot League selection in the 1,000-meter run.
 
Barron graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering in 2010 and earned her master’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2011, as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She was a member of the first class of women commissioned into the submarine community.
