SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Colgate took a 20-0 lead into the fourth quarter and held on to defeat No. 23 Cal Poly, 20-14, in the Week Zero meeting, the first meeting between the Raiders and Mustangs.
*Junior RB James Holland rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries, while scoring the game’s first touchdown with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Holland returned after missing the final seven games of the 2016 season due to injury. Sophomore RB Alex Mathews followed with a 57-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. He finished with 78 yards on just seven carries. Colgate averaged 4.5 yards per carry for the game.
*Sophomore placekicker Chris Puzzi went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts with a long of 35 yards for the Raiders.
*Colgate’s defense held Cal Poly scoreless over the first three quarters, limiting them to 3.7 yards per play over the game.
*Junior linebacker T.J. Holl had a game-high 16 total tackles. Junior defensive back Ben Hunt finished with nine tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
*The Raiders pass defense broke up five passes. Junior defensive back Tyler Castillo broke up three passes. Sophomore defensive back Abu Daramy broke up two, including one to clinch the victory on a Cal Poly fourth down in the fourth quarter with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
*Colgate’s victory over Cal Poly is the first win by a Patriot League team over a Big Sky opponent. The only other matchup was Lehigh’s loss to former Big Sky member Idaho in 1993.
