HAMILTON, N.Y. – No. 8 Colgate defeated James Madison, 23-20, in the NCAA DI FCS Championship Second Round and will advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in four seasons where they will take on No. 1 North Dakota State on Saturday, Dec. 8.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior placekicker Chris Puzzi connected on a 38-yard field goal with time expiring to lift No. 8 Colgate over James Madison, 23-20, in the NCAA DI FCS Championship Second Round at Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.
*Puzzi was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and made both of his extra point attempts for the Raiders. He had two field goals in the first half to help Colgate keep pace, as they trailed 10-6 at the half.
*JMU kicked a field goal to take a 13-6 lead in the third frame, but sophomore quarterback Grant Breneman answered with a pair of touchdown-scoring drives to take a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter.  
*Breneman rushed for a game-tying 32-yard touchdown at the 10:39 mark in the third quarter. He completed 14-of-23 passes for 190 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Owen Rockett to give Colgate its first lead at the 3:51 mark in the third quarter.
*Colgate’s defense intercepted JMU five times, including two from senior defensive back Tyler Castillo. Castillo is the Patriot League’s active career leader in interceptions with 13.
*Senior linebacker T.J. Holl - the 2018 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year - finished with 11 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss (TFL) and one interception.
*Senior running back James Holland Jr. – the 2018 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year – rushed for 89 yards on 25 carries for the Raiders.

PATRIOT LEAGUE IN THE FCS PLAYOFFS: Patriot League teams are 7-10 in FCS Playoff games since 2010, winning at least one game in the postseason in six of the last nine seasons. In Colgate’s last trip to the postseason in 2015 they advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating New Hampshire (27-20) and James Madison (44-38), before falling to Sam Houston State (48-21). The Raiders advanced to the championship game in 2003 and are now 6-8 overall in the FCS Playoffs. The Patriot League is 14-26 since 1997.
