HAMILTON – Colgate Football has won the Lambert Cup for the first time in program history.
Presented to the top FCS team in the East by the Metropolitan New York Football Writers, Colgate is a worthy recipient.
The Raiders finished 10-2 and won their third Patriot League championship in the last four years and 10th overall with a perfect 6-0 mark. Their two losses came against Army, winner of this year's FBS Lambert Trophy, and FCS champion North Dakota State.
The Raiders finished first in the nation in total defense (237.7) scoring defense (9.3) and pass efficiency defense 88.77 rating). Head coach
Dan Hunt had the team seeded No. 8 in the FCS Championship, where they knocked off James Madison 23-20 in the second round.
The team tied an NCAA FCS record with five shutouts in one season and a stretch of seven games that saw them give up a combined six points. Hunt was named Patriot League and ECAC Coach of the Year.
Colgate finished seventh in the final AFCA Coaches Poll and eighth in the STATS FCA Media/SID Poll.
Maine was named ECAC Division I FCS Team of the Year. The Raiders host Maine in the 2019 scheduled home opener, Sept. 21. Syracuse was named Division I FBS ECAC Team of the Year.
All Lambert and ECAC Award recipients, along with ECAC major award winners and football All-Stars, are being honored Feb. 21 at The Ridge in Danbury, Connecticut.
