Patriot League Announces Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week (1.7.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Boston University senior guard Payton Hauck earned Patriot League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, and Lehigh rookie guard Clair Steele was selected as rookie of the week, as announced by the League office on Monday. This is the first time Hauck and Steele received accolades this season.

Hauck scored in double-figures in Boston University’s wins over Army West Point and Bucknell this past week averaging 17 points per game, while Lehigh’s Steele had a pair of career nights against Lafayette and Navy.

American sophomore guard Indeya Sanders, Army West Point senior guard Jess Lewis, Colgate junior guard Rachel Thompson and Navy rookie guard Jennifer Coleman all earned honorable mentions.

The Patriot League Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.
 
Patriot League Player of the Week
Payton Hauck, Boston University, Sr., G, York, Pa./Northeastern
* Hauck led all scorers in both the 63-51 win over Army West Point and the 70-62 win over Bucknell.
* Against the Black Knights, the senior produced 14 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. She then matched a season high with 20 points versus Bucknell, to go with six rebounds.
* The victory against Bucknell was the Terriers’ first-ever win at Sojka Pavilion, while snapping a nine-game losing streak to the preseason League favorite.

Patriot League Rookie of the Week
Clair Steele, Lehigh, Fr., G, Orinda, Calif./Miramonte
* Steele had a pair of career highs this past week against Lafayette and Navy.
* In the 70-43 win over Lafayette, she recorded a then-career high in scoring with 11 points, before she tallied a career-high 14 points in the 56-38 victory against Navy.
* The rookie ended the week 7-of-12 (.580) from the field and 7-of-8 (.880) from the charity stripe.

Honorable Mentions
Indeya Sanders, American, So., G, Reston, Va./Herndon
* In the 76-57 win over Colgate, the sophomore landed her first double-double of her career with 12 points and a team-high 12 boards.

Jess Lewis, Army West Point, Sr., G, Denver, Colo./Regis Jesuit
* Lewis scored a season-high 20 points in Army’s 69-57 win over Loyola Maryland, while going 5-of-10 (.500) from the beyond the arc with four coming in the first quarter.

Rachel Thompson, Colgate, Jr., G, St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School
* Thompson averaged a double-double last week as she registered 20 points and 11 rebounds versus Niagara and 13 points and 12 boards against American for her fourth double-double of the season and seventh in her career.

Jennifer Coleman, Navy, Fr., G, Richmond, Va./Highland Springs
* Coleman averaged a double-double last week with 11.3 points and 10 rebounds per game over a three-game week for the Mids, as the team went 2-1 with victories over Saint Joseph’s (49-48) and Loyola Maryland (58-46).
