Patriot League Announces Swimming and Diving Academic Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Zach Piedt was named the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year while Navy junior Jamie Miller was named the women's swimming and diving scholar-athlete of the year when academic honors were announced by the League office.

The pair were also named to the respective Academic All-Patriot League Teams, comprised of 10 male and 10 female swimming and diving student-athletes. Seven of the 10 schools were represented on this year's Academic All-Patriot League men's and women's teams with Navy placing seven members on the combined teams (five men, two women).

Zach Piedt, Navy, Sr., Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill
* Piedt is working towards a degree in Computer Science and holds a 3.97 GPA. The senior posted a 4.00 GPA in each of his last six completed semesters and is ranked 24th in his class.
* The two-time men's swimming and diving scholar-athlete was also named to the 2019 First-Team All-Patriot League for placing second in the 100-yard butterfly (47.65) and the 100-yard freestyle (44.17) at this years' Patriot League Championship.
* He was part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team, as well as the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams.
* Piedt was named to the first-team all-League in 2018 and received second-team all-League accolades in both 2017 and 2016.

Jamie Miller, Navy, Jr., Rochester Hill, Mich./Adams
* Miller is an honors operations research major and holds a 3.93 GPA, posting a 4.00 GPA in three semesters and receiving academic honors from the U.S. Naval Academy in all five of her completed semesters.
* The junior was named to the First-Team All-Patriot League in both 2018 and 2019.
* This season, she won the 100-yard backstroke (54.07) and 200-yard backstroke (1:56.67) at the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship. She also swam the backstroke leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay.

Navy placed five student-athletes on this year's men's academic all-League team. Joining Piedt are teammates Daniel Cook (Quantitative Economics, 3.88), Luke Johnson (Chemistry, 3.93), Micah Oh (Mathematics, 4.00) and Michael Velazquez (Physics, 3.53). Piedt, Velazquez, Army West Point's Tom Ottman (Physics, 3.41) and Boston University's Trevor Winans (Political Science, 3.71) were all named to their third academic all-League team. Rounding out the men's 10-member team is Liam Riebling (Public Relations and Strategic Communications, 3.89) from American, Kevin Fleck (Accounting, 3.71) from Lehigh and John Callaghan (Mechanical Engineering, 3.42) from Loyola Maryland.

On the women's side, Miller is joined by fellow Midshipmen Stephanie Downing (Chemistry, 3.67). Army West Point's Kara Wineinger (Mathematical Sciences, 3.96) was named to her third academic all-League team and teammate Serica Hallstead (4.080) was named to her second. Loyola Maryland placed three student-athletes on the team with Anne Hayburn (Accounting, 4.00), Emma Schouten (Finance, 3.534) and 2018 honoree Lindsay Staszewski (Biology, 3.904). Julie Byrne (Early Childhood Education, 3.58) and Abigail Rosenberg (Managing for Sustainability, 3.73) of Bucknell and Ann Foley (Industrial and Systems Engineering, 3.63) of Lehigh earned their first academic all-League recognition to make up the women's 10-member team.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for the honors.
