No. 3 Boston University Claims First Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship (3.11.20)

Terriers punch ticket to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2011

HAMILTON, N.Y. – No. 3 Boston University outlasted No. 1 Colgate, winning 64-61, to claim the program’s first Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship and punch its ticket to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2011.
 
Boston University senior forward Max Mahoney claimed Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors after posting a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Terriers shot 56 percent (14-for-25) in the second half to overcome a four-point halftime deficit. Junior guard Javante McCoy also earned All-Tournament honors with 11 points and game-high seven assists.
 
Colgate junior guard Jordan Burns, the 2019 Tournament MVP, scored a game-high 21 points while junior guard Jack Ferguson added 17 points. Senior forward Rapolas Ivanauskas recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Boston University will learn their NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament fate on Sunday, March 15 during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show at 6 p.m. ET on CBS. Colgate, as the Patriot League regular-season champion, earned a berth to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Boston University senior forward Max Mahoney posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 3 Terriers to a 64-61 victory over No. 1 Colgate in the 2020 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Game.
*Mahoney was named Tournament MVP and junior guard Javante McCoy (11 points, 7 assists) received All-Tournament honors after leading the Terriers to their first Patriot League Tournament title and first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011.
*Sophomore forward Walter Whyte scored all 12 of his points in the second half while sophomore guard Jonas Harper scored nine of his 12 points after the break.
*The Terriers shot 56 percent (14-for-25) from the floor, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
*Colgate junior guard Jordan Burns scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half to help Colgate take a 33-29 advantage into the break.
*Senior forward Rapolas Ivanauskas posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while senior forward Will Rayman added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders.
*Colgate outscored the Terriers, 20-14, in the paint during the first half.
*Boston University took its first lead of the game, 34-33, on a Mahoney layup 46 seconds into the second half.
*Harper hit three 3-pointers during a three-minute stretch to put Boston University in front 56-53 with 6:28 to play.
*Junior guard Jack Ferguson scored eight-straight points for the Raiders during a four-minute span to keep the Raiders within one possession. He finished with 17 points.
*Mahoney scored the Terriers’ final four points to seal the 64-61 win.
