2021 Patriot League Volleyball Championship Continues Saturday Afternoon (11.19.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The 2021 Patriot League Volleyball Championship continues on Saturday, Nov. 20, with a pair of semifinal matches at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.  The Patriot League Volleyball Championship Match will follow on Sunday, November 21.
 
The top-seeded Colgate Raiders (16-9, 13-3 PL) host No. 6 Navy at 4 p.m. No. 2 Lafayette takes on No. 4 American at 7 p.m. Both matches, along with Sunday's championship match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Regular-Season Meeting: Colgate went 1-1 against Navy during the regular season, including a 3-0 loss on Sep. 24 and a 3-1 win on Nov. 6.
 
Scouting the Raiders: Colgate is led by two-time Patriot League Setter of the Year and first-team All-League member Julia Kurowski and first-team, and All-League honorees sophomore outside hitter Libby Overmyer and graduate student outside hitter Alli Lowe have also been key for the top-seeded Raiders. Junior middle blocker Sophie Thompson leads the Patriot League in blocks (124) averaging 1.39 per set, while Lowe ranks fourth in the Patriot League in kills per set (3.33). Overmyer enters the postseason, averaging 3.22 kills per set, to go with 0.72 digs per set, while Kurowski paced the team with 779 assists to go with 196 digs and 42 block assists in 90 sets played during the regular season. As a team, Colgate leads the League in hitting percentage (.225) and blocks per set (2.28).
 
Last Time Out for Navy: Navy swept its quarterfinal match against Army West Point, 3-0. The Mids' offense was led by Cami Herman and Avery Stowell, who both players recorded double digit kills. Herman led the team in kills (13) and hitting percentage (.545), with one error in the three-set victory. The team collected 15 blocks against the Black Knights holding them to a .068 hitting percentage in the three-set match. Sophomore middle blocker Maggie Bodman led the team with eight block assists followed by sophomore middle blocker Anna Klemeyer and sophomore outside hitter Jamie Llewellyn, who tied with six apiece.

Regular-Season Meeting: Lafayette split a pair of wins against American during the regular season with a 3-0 win on Oct. 1 and a 3-1 loss on Oct. 30.

Scouting the Leopards: Lafayette is led by the 2021 Patriot League Player of the Year Leanna Deegan and the 2021 Coach of the Year Ryan Adams. Deegan, a senior outside hitter, leads the Patriot League and NCAA Division I in kills per set with 5.90. Under the leadership of Adams, the No. 2 seeded Leopards set a program record for Patriot League wins in a season (10) after their 3-0 sweep over Lehigh on Nov. 6. Sophomore setter Alyssa Vitale leads the League in assists (990), averaging 11.12 per set. As a team, the Leopards rank second in hitting percentage (.225), assists per set (12.46), and kills per set (13.60).
 
Last Time Out for American: The Eagles defeated Loyola Maryland 3-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round on Saturday. Junior outside hitter Zeynep Uzen led American's offense, recording 22 kills, followed by second-team All-League member senior middle blocker Carlie Fikse (13). In the fifth set, the Eagles tallied eight kills with zero errors for a team hitting percentage of .421 to win the match. Freshman setter Esma Sipahi and sophomore setter Tyra Areskong controlled the offense dishing out 25 and 21 assists. Leading the defensive efforts in the victory was graduate student libero Chiara Bosetti tallying 35 digs.
