Patriot League Announces Field Hockey All-League Teams and Major Awards (11.2.21)

American and Lafayette claim two major awards, five All-League honorees each; Lehigh picks up one major award

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lafayette senior midfielder Audrey Sawers and Lehigh graduate student Lenke Havas were named the Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, when the League office announced its postseason major awards and All-League Teams.
 
Patriot League regular-season champion American claimed two of the five major awards, as sophomore Bryn Underwood received Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, and Steve Jennings earned his 10th Patriot League Coach of the Year honor.
 
Leopards’ freshman midfielder/defender Lineke Spaans was named Patriot League Field Hockey Rookie of the Year, the sixth Lafayette student-athlete to earn the honor and first since Molly McAndrew in 2018.
 
In addition to earning two major awards apiece, American and Lafayette finished with five All-League selections. Bucknell and Lehigh finished with four apiece, while Boston University placed three student-athletes on the two All-League squads. Holy Cross had two honorees and Colgate earned one.
 
American graduate student Noor Coenen and Lehigh’s Havas became the first two field hockey student-athletes to earn All-Patriot League honors five times. Coenen, the two-time League offensive player of the year and 2019 tournament MVP, is a five-time first-team selection. Havas is a four-time first-team selection.
 
The Patriot League field hockey major awards and All-League teams were voted on by the League’s seven field hockey head coaches. They were not eligible to vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
 
The 2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship begins on Thursday, Nov. 4 at American University’s William I. Jacob Recreational Complex in Washington, D.C. Thursday’s semifinal-round matches and Saturday championship game will be available on ESPN+.

2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year
Audrey Sawers, Lafayette, Sr., Midfielder, North Vancouver, B.C./Handsworth
*Sawers leads the Patriot League and is 18th in NCAA DI in points per game (1.72), with a League-leading 0.61 assist per game, the ninth-best mark in the nation.  
*The two-time All-Patriot League First-Team selection is tied for fourth in the League with 10 goals, and tied for second with three game-winning goals, helping the Leopards rank second in the League with 2.67 goals per game.
*Her League-leading 11 assists is the highest single-season total in the Patriot League since 2015.
 
2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Year
Lenke Havas, Lehigh, Gr., Defender/Midfielder, Maastricht, Netherlands/Sint-Maartenscollege
*Havas led a Mountain Hawks’ defense that held opponents to 1.88 goals per game, while posting the program’s first winning regular-season record since 1994 and their first League tournament appearance since 2011.
*One of two five-time All-League honorees in Patriot League history, she finished the regular season tied for second in the League in goals (11) and tied for third in points (27).
**In League play, she finished among the Patriot League leaders in assists (4) and points (8), while helping the Mountain Hawks to a +0.83 average scoring margin.
 
2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Year
Bryn Underwood, American, So., Goalkeeper, Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson
*Underwood recorded a Patriot League-best .802 save percentage, the 13th-best in NCAA DI, to lead the Eagles to a Patriot League regular-season title and a No. 17 ranking by the NFHCA.
*The defending League rookie of the year recorded three shutouts in six League games, allowing just three goals for a League-best 0.542 goals-against average during that span to help American post its 10th undefeated season since joining the Patriot League in 2001.
*Underwood’s overall goals-against average (1.35) ranked second in the League and 18th in the nation, while her 0.542 goals-against average in League games led the Patriot League.
 
2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Rookie of the Year
Lineke Spaans, Lafayette, Fr., Midfielder/Defender, Noord-Holland, Netherlands/Vitus College
*Spaans started all 18 of Lafayette’s matches, finishing with 16 points on six goals and four assists, while playing a critical role in a defense that allowed just 1.22 goals per game, the second-best mark in the League.
*The First-Team All-League honoree helped Lafayette post a League-best 1.45 average overall scoring margin, helping the program to a 13-5 record, its best mark since 2012.
*Her four assists in League play were tied for fourth, including the game-winning assist in the Leopards’ double-overtime win over Bucknell to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Championship.

2021 Patriot League Field Hockey Coach of the Year
Steve Jennings, American
*Jennings led American to its 12th regular-season title and the 10th season the program has gone undefeated in League play since joining the Patriot League in 2001.
*The Eagles outscored Patriot League opponents by an average of 2.50 goals per game, while allowing an average of 0.50 goals per game in six League contests.
*The 10-time Patriot League Coach of the Year has his program ranked No. 17 in NCAA DI by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
 
2021 All-Patriot League Field Hockey by the Numbers.
Eleven of the 24 All-Patriot League field hockey selections are multi-year honorees, including Coenen and Havas, the League’s first five-time All-League selections. American senior defender Georgia Davies, Colgate 5th-year midfielder Taylor Casamassa and Lafayette senior forward Molly McAndrew are all three-time All-League honorees. American graduate student midfielder Gaby de Kock, Bucknell senior defender Erin Zielinski, Holy Cross senior defender Caitlin Little, Lafayette’s Sawers and junior defender Simone Hefting, and Lehigh senior forward Drew Pecora are two-time All-League selections.
 
Thirteen student-athletes, including American senior forward Aidan Rossman, the 2020-21 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned All-League accolades for the first time. Boston University junior back Rachel Borzymowski, who led the League and finished third in NCAA DI with six defensive saves, also received All-League recognition for the first time.
 
The 2021 All-Patriot League team featured a wealth of experience with one 5th-year, two graduate students and 10 seniors gaining recognition. Six juniors also made the team, with Underwood as the lone sophomore. Three freshmen made the All-League squad with Spaans and Bucknell forward Lily Neilson, the League’s leader in goals with 13, both making the first team. Boston University forward Payton Anderson was a second-team selection.
