Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Players of the Week Announced (11.29.21)

Bucknell’s Timmerman and Loyola Maryland’s Brown earn men’s basketball weekly honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell junior center Alex Timmerman claimed Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week when the League office announced weekly accolades on Monday. Loyola Maryland freshman guard David Brown III captured his first rookie of the week honor.
 
Timmerman collected GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career after averaging a double-double in three games for the Bison last week. In his first three collegiate starts, the Crystal Lake, Ill. native averaged 17.7 points and 10.7 rebounds, including a 20-point, 12-rebound performance in Bucknell’s 65-56 overtime win over Siena.
 
Brown earned GEICO Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week honors for the first time after averaging 7.5 points on 57.1 percent (4-for-7) shooting from long distance. The La Plata, Md. native started and scored seven points in the Greyhounds’ 75-70 win over Fairfield.  
 
Army West Point sophomore guard Jalen Rucker, Boston University graduate student guard Javante McCoy, Colgate senior guard Nelly Cummings, Loyola Maryland junior guard Cam Spencer and Navy senior guard John Carter Jr. all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
The Patriot League men’s basketball players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alex Timmerman, Bucknell, Jr., C, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central
*Timmerman averaged a double-double during a three-game span last week with 17.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in his first three collegiate starts.
*The junior center scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Bucknell to a 65-56 overtime win over defending MAAC regular-season champion, Siena.
*Earlier in the week, Timmerman scored 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds against defending Southern Conference regular-season champion Mercer before registering a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Rider.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
David Brown III, Loyola Maryland, Fr., G, La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara
*Brown averaged 7.5 points and shot 57.1 percent (4-for-7) from 3-point range to help Loyola Maryland record victories against Elizabethtown (69-42) and Fairfield (75-70) last week.
*The freshman guard scored eight points in 21 minutes against Elizabethtown.
*Inserted into the starting lineup, Brown finished with seven points on 2-of-3 shooting from deep in Loyola Maryland’s win over the Stags.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Jalen Rucker, Army West Point, So., G, Baltimore, Md./Gilman(USMAPS)
*Rucker scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Black Knights to a 65-61 win over Marist. The sophomore guard shot 9-of-14 from the field while finishing with four boards and two steals.
 
Javante McCoy, Boston University, Gr., G, Milwaukee, Wis./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.)
*McCoy averaged 18.67 points while shooting 55.6 percent (20-for-36) from the floor and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from beyond the arc. He scored 14 points in a 72-59 win over Sam Houston State to earn MVP honors of the Jax Bracket at the Jacksonville Classic. He scored 22 points in an 81-80 overtime loss at Florida State and finished with the week with 20 points in a 61-60 win over Merrimack.
 
Nelly Cummings, Colgate, Sr., G, Midland, Pa./Lincoln Park
Cummings matched his career-high with 25 points in an overtime loss to Harvard. The senior guard shot 9-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range in addition to dishing out five assists.
 
Cam Spencer, Loyola Maryland, Jr., G, Davidsonville, Md./Boys’ Latin
*Spencer 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals to lead Loyola Maryland to a 2-0 week, with wins over Elizabethtown (69-42) and Fairfield (75-70). The junior guard scored a team-high 20 points in the Greyhounds comeback win against the Stags.
 
John Carter Jr., Navy, Sr., G, Spring Hill, Tenn./Summit
*Carter Jr. averaged 14.0 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 63 percent (5-for-8) to lead the Mids to a 2-0 week, with wins over Washington (Md.) and Mount St. Mary’s. He tallied 18 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep to down the defending NEC-champion Mountaineers, 67-40.
