Patriot League Announces Men’s Soccer Academic Honors (11.9.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point senior goalkeeper Jacob Suppiah earned the 2021 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade, when it was announced by the League office on Tuesday. Suppiah is also one of the 11 members of the sport’s Academic All-Patriot League team.

Eight of the 10 Patriot League programs are represented on the academic all-League squad, with Loyola Maryland leading the way with three student-athletes on the team.
 
Five of the 11 student-athletes selected to the academic all-League squad were also named to the All-Patriot League teams last week. The 2021 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year Navy senior Matt Nocita (History, 3.58) and goalkeeper of the year Loyola Maryland graduate student Chase Vosvick (Sociology, 3.58) also garnered a spot on the academic team.
 
Army West Point junior defender Luke Doyle (Business Management, 3.965), American junior midfielder Jack Green (Finance, 3.93), Bucknell senior midfielder Patrick O’Hara (Biology, 3.97), Colgate junior midfielder Max Edelstein (International Relations & Economics, 3.85), Lafayette Sebastian Varela (Economics, 3.92), Lehigh junior defender Euan Forrest (Behavioral Neuroscience, 3.95), and Loyola Maryland graduate student defender Jacob Denison (Business Administration, 3.72) and senior forward Kelan Swales (Communication, 3.55) were placed on the academic team.
 
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player within his/her sport. Freshmen or student-athletes in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out during the summer.

Jacob Suppiah, Army West Point, Sr., GK, Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School               
* Suppiah owns a 3.964 cumulative GPA as a nuclear and space sciences major at West Point.
* The senior has been named to the Dean’s List every semester at the Academy since his plebe year.
* Suppiah has received Patriot League Academic Honor Roll laurels in 2018 and ‘19, while also earning Academic all-League honors in 2019.
* He is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma - the National Honor Society for Athletes.
* This season, Suppiah recorded 42 saves to go with a .700 save percentage and a 1.47 goals-against average.
