No. 2 Colgate Defeats No. 9 Loyola Maryland to Punch Ticket to NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

The Raiders win the Patriot League men’s basketball title for the second time in three seasons

HAMILTON, N.Y.  – No. 2 Colgate defeated No. 9 Loyola Maryland, 85-72, to capture the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship at Cotterell Court on Sunday. Head Coach Matt Langel’s Raiders earned the League title for the second time in three seasons and the fourth time in program history.

Senior guard Jordan Burns finished with 16 points and four assists to collect Patriot League Championship Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career, after receiving the honor in 2019. Burns is the fourth men’s basketball student-athlete in League history to earn championship MVP honors twice, joining Bucknell’s Charles Lee (2005, 2006), American’s Garrison Carr (2008, 2009) and Bucknell’s Mike Muscala (2011, 2013).

Colgate junior guard Tucker Richardson scored a team-high 17 points, and senior guard Jack Ferguson added 16 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while sophomore forward Keegan Records added eight points and four boards to earn All-Tournament honors.

“This is as unified a group as I’ve ever been around,” Langel said following the game. “With everything going on in the world they’ve been able to have difficult conversations and grow as a group. Amidst (COVID-19) and all of the obstacles we’ve faced they just keep coming back for more. They love one another and I’m really proud to be a part of it as the Colgate men’s basketball coach.”

Loyola Maryland junior guard Jaylin Andrews scored a game-high 20 points, while sophomore forward Santi Aldama added 13 points and a game-high seven boards to make the All-Tournament honors.
