BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell senior guard Abby Kapp was named the Patriot League Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, in addition to being selected as one of five members of the 2020-21 Academic All-Patriot League Team, when it was announced by the League Friday.
Joining Kapp on the academic all-League team are Boston University sophomore guard Maggie Pina, Lafayette senior guard Drew Freeland, and Lehigh senior guard Mary Clougherty and sophomore guard/forward Frannie Hottinger.
Voting for the Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League team is conducted by the League's women's basketball sports information directors.
2020-21 Patriot League Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Abby Kapp, Bucknell, Sr., G, Barto, Pa./Boyertown
* In the classroom, the economics major carries a 3.87 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is a research assistant for Bucknell’s Department of Economics.
* A three-time Academic Honor Roll honoree, Kapp was also named the 2019-20 Women’s Basketball Academic All-Patriot League Team.
* Kapp is also a member of Bucknell Athletics’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission.
* Kapp averaged 12.1 points in eight Patriot League games this season, to go with 4.5 rebounds per game.
* The senior recorded double figures in four of eight contests, including a pair of 20-point performances.
2020-21 ACADEMIC ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAM
A 2020 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Pina is currently working toward a political science degree while holding a 3.80 GPA. Pina scored in double figures five times this season while averaging 9.3 points in 12 games.
Freeland, a mechanical engineering major, has garnered a 3.69 GPA while being a two-time member of the League’s Academic Honor Roll. The senior is second in the League in three-point field goal percentage (.447).
Clougherty joins the academic team as a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member and a six-member dean’s list honoree. As an accounting major, she owns a 3.81 GPA. On the court, Clougherty has tallied two games of 20 points or more with eight games in double-figures. Clougherty also joins Kapp as a member of the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission.
A three-time Dean’s List honoree, Hottinger, holds a 3.94 GPA while studying business. The sophomore leads the team with 14.0 points per game with scoring double-digits in eight games.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises a pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
