2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Quarterfinal Round Recap (3.6.21)

Colgate to host Bucknell and Army West Point to welcome Loyola Maryland in the semifinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. No. 2 Colgate and No. 4 Army West Point protected home court and advanced, while No. 6 Bucknell and No. 9 Loyola Maryland recorded upsets to move on to the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinals on Wednesday night.
 
The Raiders will host No. 6 Bucknell in a rematch of the 2018 and 2019 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Games. No. 9 Loyola Maryland will travel to No. 4 Army West Point in the semifinals. Wednesday’s game will be the second time the Greyhounds and Black Knights will meet in the League championships. Loyola Maryland won the previous meeting, 82-79, in the 2018 first round. Both semifinal-round games will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
 
Spectators are not permitted at any of the host sites through the entirety of the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore forward Santi Aldama posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards to lead No. 9 Loyola Maryland to an upset victory over No. 1 Navy, 76-68, in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Championship.
*Aldama and the Greyhounds outrebounded the top-seeded Mids’ 34-26 while scoring 44 points in the paint and 19 second-chance points.
*Junior guard Jaylin Andrews led four Greyhounds in double-figures with 17 points. Sophomore guard Cam Spencer, playing his third game of the season, finished with 10 points, five rebounds and seven assists, and freshman forward Alonso Faure contributed 13 points in the Greyhounds upset win.
*Junior guard Greg Summers scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the short-handed Midshipmen, who played their third-straight game without First Team All-Patriot League senior guard Cam Davis and junior forward Richard Njoku.
*Sophomore guard Patrick Dorsey added 12 points and four rebounds for the Mids.
*The Greyhounds are the first No. 9 seed in the Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship to win a quarterfinal game since 2016 when Holy Cross defeated No. 1 Bucknell. The Crusaders went on to win the 2016 League title.
*Loyola Maryland will travel to take on No. 4 Army West Point in Wednesday’s semifinal-round matchup.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior guards Jordan Burns and Jack Ferguson and junior guard Tucker Richardson each scored 16 points to lead No. 2 Colgate to a 77-69 victory over No. 7 Boston University in a rematch of the 2020 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Game.
*Burns, the Patriot League Player of the Year, and Richardson grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists apiece.
* Ferguson connected on 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to help Colgate’s bench outscore the Terriers’ bench unit, 24-2.
*Boston University senior guard Javante McCoy scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting.
*Terriers' senior forward Sukhmail Mathon posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and junior forward Walter Whyte added 12 points for Boston University.
*Colgate will host No. 6 Bucknell in Wednesday’s semifinal-round matchup.

EASTON, Pa. Senior forward John Meeks recorded a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 6 Bucknell to a 91-84 upset win over No. 3 Lafayette in the quarterfinal-round of the Patriot League Championship.
*Meeks connected on 10-of-20 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line for his third 30-point game in five games played this season.
*Sophomore guard Xander Rice finished with 19 points. Junior guard Andrew Funk added 14 points and junior guard Walter Ellis contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists to help the Bison advance to take on No. 2 Colgate in the semifinals.
*Leopards’ senior guard Justin Jaworski scored a team-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-7 from deep. He also dished out a team-high five assists.
*Senior guard E.J. Stephens added 22 points, while sophomore forward Neal Quinn and Leo O’Boyle scored 11 points apiece. Junior guard Tyrone Perry added six points, four assists and four steals.
*Bucknell will travel to No. 2 Colgate for Wednesday’s semifinal-round matchup.

WEST POINT, N.Y. Senior forward Alex King posted game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 4 Army West Point to an 89-66 victory over No. 5 American in the quarterfinal-round of the Patriot League Championship on Saturday.  
*King connected on 8-of-11 from the floor to lead four Black Knights in double-figures. Junior guard Josh Caldwell, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, added 17 points and six rebounds.
*Senior forward Nick Finke and freshman guard Jared Cross added 14 and 10 points, respectively, to help Army’s bench unit outscore American’s bench, 34-14.
*Senior guard Jamir Harris led the Eagles with 18 points while senior guard Stacy Beckton Jr. added 13 points, four rebounds and two steals.
*The Eagles started the game on a 5-0 run, but Caldwell’s layup at the 15:08 mark in the first half gave the Black Knights a lead they would never relinquish.
*The Black Knights will host No. 9 Loyola Maryland in Wednesday’s semifinal-round meeting.
