Patriot League Announces 2022 Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Honors (2.2.22)

Loyola Maryland claims top spot in the poll, sweeps major awards and lands six on preseason team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola Maryland swept the four 2022 Patriot League women’s lacrosse preseason major awards and were picked to finish atop the preseason poll when the League office announced honors on Tuesday.
 
The two-time defending champion Greyhounds received 162 points and 18-first place votes. Head Coach Jen Adams’s Loyola Maryland squad enters the 2022 season with high expectations, having been picked No. 10 in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Poll earlier this week. Navy received 143 points and the remaining two first-place votes to finish second in the preseason poll. Army West Point was picked third with 121 points, while Lehigh was selected fourth with 116. Boston University and Colgate tied for fifth with 95 points, with Holy Cross (57), Bucknell (47), American (45) and Lafayette (19) rounding out the preseason poll.
 
The Greyhounds placed a League-high six student-athletes on the 16-member Preseason All-Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse team, highlighted by the four preseason major award winners. Greyhounds’ graduate student attacker Livy Rosenzweig, graduate student midfielder Sam Fiedler, graduate student goalkeeper Kaitlyn Larsson and senior defender Katie Detwiler made the preseason All-League team in addition to earning major awards at their respective positions. Rosenzweig, Detwiler and Larsson are the League’s reigning attacker, defensive player and goalkeeper of the year. Senior attacker Jillian Wilson and graduate student midfielder Elli Kluegel both made the preseason All-League squad after receiving first- and second-team All-League honors, respectively, after the 2021 season. Kluegel was also named the Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
 
Navy placed three student-athletes on the preseason squad, including Gil Eby (Sr., M/D), Christine Fiore (Sr., D/M) and Reagan Roelofs (Sr., A/M). Eby and Fiore were 2021 First-Team All-Patriot League selections, while Roelofs made the second team. Army West Point senior attacker Caroline Raymond, a two-time second-team All-League honoree, made the preseason squad with teammate Ceara Sweeney (Sr., D).
 
American senior attacker Emma Vinall, the League’s active career leader in goals (163) and Lehigh junior attacker Gabby Schneider made the preseason team after earning first-team All-League honors in 2021. Boston University junior attacker Jen Barry, Colgate sophomore attacker Eliza Soutter and Holy Cross senior attacker Jolie Creo earned preseason honors after making the 2021 All-League second team.
 
Voting for the Patriot League women’s lacrosse preseason major awards, all-League squad and poll were conducted by League head coaches and sports information directors. Neither group was permitted to vote for their team or student-athletes.
 
2022 Patriot League Women’s Preseason Attacker of the Year
Livy Rosenzweig, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Attacker, Katonah, N.Y./Somers
Career Stats: 144 goals, 184 assists, 328 points, 81 ground balls, 43 caused turnovers, 285 draw controls
*Rosenzweig is the defending Patriot League Attacker of the Year, Tournament MVP, and a three-time first-team All-League selection.
*The two-time IWLCA All-American and three-time Inside Lacrosse Media All-American led the Patriot League in points (83) and assists (50) in 15 games last season.
*She enters the season as the League’s career leader in assists (184), is fourth in points (328), fifth in draw controls (285) and tied for 28th in goals (144).
 
2022 Patriot League Women’s Preseason Midfielder of the Year
Sam Fiedler, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Midfielder, Reisterstown, Md./Garrison Forest
Career Stats: 134 goals, 53 assists, 187 points, 94 ground balls, 34 caused turnovers
*Fiedler is a two-time All-Patriot League selection, earning first-team honors following the 2021 season, after leading the Greyhounds with 32 goals, to go along with 13 assists, 45 points, 14 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
*The ILWomen Preseason All-American is 35th in Patriot League history with 134 career goals.
*She is a two-time IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection in addition to a 2020 ILWomen Second Team All-American
 
2022 Patriot League Women’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Katie Detwiler, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Defender, Devon, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll
Career Stats: 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points, 54 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, 64 draw controls
*Detwiler, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, is a two-time All-League honoree and seven-time League defensive player of the week.
*She recorded 41 draw controls, 20 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers last season to anchor a Greyhounds defense that allowed 8.60 goals per game, the sixth-best mark in NCAA DI.
*The Devon, Pa. native received 2021 All-America accolades from the IWLCA (2nd), US Lacrosse (3rd) and ILWomen (HM) while earning IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honors last season.
 
2022 Patriot League Women’s Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year
Kaitlyn Larsson, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Goalkeeper, Sr., Garden City, N.Y./Garden City
Career Stats: 46 games played, 7.94 goals-against average, 235 saves, .528 save percentage
*Larsson, the 2021 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, led the League and finished fifth in NCAA DI in goals-against average (8.11) while placing atop the League and 11th in the nation in save percentage (.503).
*She earned 2021 All-Patriot League Tournament honors after holding Colgate and Lehigh to six goals apiece while making 18 saves on the way to a League title.
*Larsson was a Second Team IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honoree following the 2021 season, holding opponents in 10 of Loyola’s 12 wins to single-digit goal totals.
