Patriot League 2022 Swimming and Diving Championship Day Two Recap (2.17.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Navy men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have maintained their lead after two days of the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Lejeune Hall. Army West Point currently resides in second place in both the men’s and women’s categories while Bucknell ranks third in both categories.
 
In the women’s 500-yard freestyle event, Bucknell senior Maddie Hartigan and Navy senior Martina Thomas (4:45.85) tied for first-place honors (4:45.85) with Bucknell junior Sabrina Vumbacco finishing in third place in a time of 4:48.90. Navy freshman Everet Andrew finished first (4:18.31) while teammates sophomore Garrett McGovern (4:19.42) and freshman Conor Cranfield (4:19.57) earned second and third place to round out the men’s 500-yard freestyle .

The women’s 200 individual medley saw close finishes as Army freshman Meghan Cole topped the group with a time of 2:00.14, closely followed by Loyola sophomore Lily Mead (2:00.34) and Navy freshman Haley Harris (2:01.67). In the men’s 200 individual medley final, Navy senior Ethan Tack (1:44.58) edged out teammate junior Jackson Schultz (1:46.01) and Army freshman Evan Yoo (1:46.20). Tack’s time in the 200 IM set a meet record.

The women’s 50 freestyle featured senior Sydney Harrington from Navy (22.53) finishing first just ahead of American sophomore Mini Watts (22.72). Lehigh’s Ann Foley rounded out the top three with a time of 22.87. Black Knights’ freshman Owen Harlow grabbed first-place accolades with a meet record in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 19.72. Bucknell junior Leo Kuyl (19.96) came in second while Loyola sophomore Caleb Kelly (20.00) finished third.
 
Navy senior Hannah Montau took first place in the women’s one-meter diving competition with 309.55 points, Army freshman Minh Donnell took home second place with 272.30 points and Navy senior Caroline Turner finished in third place with 263.35 points.

Navy’s team comprised of Brooke West, Riley Gavigan, Sydney Harrington and Martina Thomas took home the gold in the women’s 400 medley relay with a pool-record time of 3:37.87. Army (Lauren Carag, Aurelie Migault, Meghan Cole and Sammie Edwards) finished second in 3:40.64 and Boston University (Sezin Eliguel, Stephanie Liu, Clarissa Hoyt and Sydney Sorbello) came in third with a time of 3:42.78.

The men’s 400 medley relay had Navy’s men’s relay team of Caleb Mauldin, Jackson Schultz, Jonah Harm and Garrett McGovern record a time of 3:07.32 for the League record. Army West Point’s team of Jacob Powell, Evan Zhang, Ian Shahan and Owen Harlow finished second (3:13.03) and Loyola (Patrick Hayburn, Max Verheyen, Reid Hussey and Caleb Kelly) came in third-place with a time of 3:13.05.
 
Day three of the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships will begin Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. Live coverage of the 2022 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships will be available each day on ESPN+.
