No. 1 Colgate Claims Sixth Patriot League Men’s Basketball Title in Victory over No. 6 Lafayette

Raiders’ Tucker Richardson earns MVP honors after posting a triple-double and breaking assists records

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 1 Colgate claimed its fourth Patriot League Men’s Basketball title in five years and sixth in program history with a 79-61 victory over No. 6 Lafayette on Wednesday night at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
 
The Raiders’ sixth title ties Bucknell and Holy Cross for the Patriot League record, while Colgate head coach Matt Langel tied Holy Cross’s Ralph Willard with his fourth League crown.
 
Colgate senior guard Tucker Richardson earned PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship MVP honors after posting a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and a Patriot League Championship Game-record of 11 assists. Richardson posted the first triple-double in a Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Game since the Raiders’ Adonal Foyle recorded 22 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocked shots against Holy Cross in 1996. The Patriot League Player, Defensive Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year also broke the men’s basketball tournament record with 34 assists in three games.
 
Richardson was joined on the All-Patriot League Tournament Team by teammates Keegan Records (Sr., F) and Oliver Lynch-Daniels (Sr., G). Records scored a game-high 21 points, while Lynch-Daniels added 14 points.
 
Lafayette senior forward Leo O’Boyle and freshman forward Josh Rivera made the All-Tournament Team after leading the sixth-seeded Leopards to the title game for the first time since 2015. Rivera led Lafayette with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. O’Boyle added nine points and five boards, while averaging 15.3 points through three tournament games.
 
Army West Point junior guard Jalen Rucker rounded out the All-Tournament Team after averaging 29.0 points in two games during the PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship.
 
Colgate will learn their NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament fate on Sunday, March 12, during the NCAA Tournament Show at 6 p.m. ET on CBS.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior guard Tucker Richardson recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and a Patriot League Championship Game-record 11 assists to lead No. 1 Colgate to a 79-61 victory over No. 6 Lafayette to claim their fourth Patriot League men’s basketball title in five years. 
*Richardson, the Patriot League Player and Defensive Player of the Year, broke a League championship record with 34 assists through three games, eclipsing the previous record of 30 set by Holy Cross’s Roger Breslin in 1993. 
*The tournament MVP also broke the championship game record with 11 assists, surpassing Breslin’s mark of 10 from 1993.
*Senior forward Keegan Records connected on 9-of-10 from the floor for a game-high 21 points to lead five Raiders in double-figures.  
 *Senior guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels finished with 14 points, while freshman guard Braeden Smith and senior forward Ryan Moffatt added 11 and 10 points, respectively. 
 *Lafayette freshman forward Josh Rivera finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Devin Hines added 10 points for the Leopards. 
*Senior forward Leo O’Boyle scored nine points and grabbed five boards for the Leopards.  
 
BY THE NUMBERS
*Colgate shot 60.7 percent from the floor (17-of-28) in the first half to take a 41-24 lead into the break. The Leopards had been holding opponents to a 19.7 field-goal percentage in their first two Patriot League Tournament games.
*Records scored seven of his 17 first-half points during a 10-2 run to extend the Raiders’ lead to double-digits at 23-10 by the 8:13 mark. Richardson dished out eight assists and scored seven points in the first half.
*Lafayette senior forward Leo O’Boyle and freshman forward Josh Rivera led the Leopards with nine points in the first half.
*Moffatt scored all of his 10 points in the second half, while Richardson and Lynch-Daniels added seven points apiece after the break to help the Raiders connect on 56 percent (14-of-25) from the floor in the second half.
*The Raiders outscored Lafayette in transition, 18-0.
*Lafayette held a 14-1 advantage on the offensive glass and outscored Colgate on second-chance points, 12-2. Sophomore guard T.J. Berger had three offensive boards.
