Loyola Maryland Downs Army West Point to Claim Fourth Straight Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Title (5.6.23)

Greyhounds’ Sydni Black earns MVP after scoring a game-high five goals

BALTIMORE – Top-seeded Loyola Maryland defeated No. 2 Army West Point, 13-8, to claim their fourth straight Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship, and the seventh in program history. Greyhounds’ junior attack Sydni Black posted a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to earn championship MVP honors.
 
Black matched her career-high with five goals, including three between the third and fourth quarters, to help the Greyhounds pull away from the Black Knights after a back-and-forth first half. Graduate student midfielder Jillian Wilson finished with one goal, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a team-high six draw controls to join Black on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
 
Loyola Maryland graduate student Katie Detwiler helped anchor a defense that held Army West Point to a single-digit goal total for only the second time this season, with sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Spence making nine saves to earn spots on the All-Tournament team.
 
Army West Point freshman midfielder Brigid Duffy finished with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists to earn a spot on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. Senior attacker Julia Franzoni had a game-high eight draw controls, and senior defender Cathleen Parker were selected to the All-Tournament team.
 
Lehigh senior attack Katia Carnevale, junior goalkeeper Hayley Hunt, Navy senior defender Athena Corroon and sophomore midfielder Emily Messinese earned All-Tournament honors for their performances in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
 
The Greyhounds will learn their postseason fate when the tournament field is announced during the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Selection Show on Sunday, May 7, at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.

BALTIMORE Junior attack Sydni Black recorded a game-high six points, matching a career-high with five goals to lead No. 1 Loyola Maryland to a 13-8 victory over No. 2 Army West Point for their fourth straight Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse title.
*Senior attack Emily Wills finished with two goals and two assists for the Greyhounds, while sophomore midfielder Chase Boyle and senior midfielder Meg Hillman scored two goals apiece.
*Graduate student midfielder Jillian Wilson finished with a team-high six draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers to go with one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Spence made nine saves to help Loyola Maryland claim their seventh Patriot League title.
*Army West Point Brigid Duffy led the Black Knights with two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Jolie Riedell added one goal and one assist.
*Black Knights senior attacker Julia Franzoni had one goal and eight draw controls in the loss.
*This marked the Black Knights’ first championship game appearance in the eighth year of the program.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Greyhounds struck first, as Boyle and Black scored the game’s first two goals to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.
*The Black Knights answered, as junior attack Julia Gorajek and freshman midfielder Allison Reilly scored two of the next three goals to bring Army within one goal, at 3-2 by the end of the first quarter.
*Army’s Riedell tied the score at three with a free-position goal at the 11:52 mark in the second quarter before Loyola sophomore attack Georgia Latch and Army’s Duffy traded goals knotting the score at four.
*Wilson and Black found the back of the net with less than a minute remaining in the first half for the Greyhounds to begin a 6-0 run that gave them a 10-4 lead by the 5:06 mark in the third quarter.
*The Black Knights scored the last two goals of the game, with junior attack Carleigh Armstrong and Franzoni finding the back of the catch within the last three minutes.
