2023-24 Patriot League Women’s Basketball Notebook presented by PenFed Credit Union (1.23.24)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. —Eight Patriot League women’s basketball teams will appear on ESPN+ on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

At 6 p.m., Army West Point hosts Boston University while Lafayette hosts Loyola Maryland. American travels to Holy Cross, while Bucknell travels to Navy at 7 p.m.

Weimar Continues Dominant Senior Season
In BU's win over Colgate last Saturday, senior forward Caitlin Weimar became the 26th Terrier in women’s basketball program history to score 1,000 points (1,189 in her career) during a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double on 8-of-14 shooting. This season, Weimar leads the League averaging career-bests of 18.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks. The senior is also atop the Patriot League leaderboard and tied sixth nationally with 12 double-doubles on the year. She has been named the League’s player of the week three times this season, matching her personal- and program-best from the 2022-23 season.

6-0 ‘Saders
Holy Cross enters this week with a 6-0 record in League play and an eight-game winning streak. The winning streak matches the longest streak under head coach Maureen Magarity, as they won eight straight last season.  The Crusaders rank first in the Patriot League through six League games in both scoring offense (71.8) and scoring defense (53.7), field goal percentage defense (35.5), assists per game (17.8), rebounds per game (43.2), and defensive rebounds per game (28.2). Holy Cross currently ranks third in NCAA DI in scoring defense, fourth in field-goal percentage defense, ninth in three-point percentage defense, 10th in defensive rebounds per game, and 18th in rebounds per game.

Quick Hitters Around the League
* Army has won three of its last four games after starting League play 0-2.
* Bucknell has won four consecutive contests against Navy and owns a 45-30 record all-time against the Mids.
* Holy Cross senior guard Bronagh Power-Cassidy is in sole possession of 10th on the program's career three-pointer list with 147.
* Lafayette junior forward Halee Smith is shooting a team-high 44.0 percent from three-point range.
* Lehigh senior guard Maddie Albrecht led all players with a career-high 27 points as she went 10-of-13 from the field in the 79-61 win over Colgate.
* Loyola sophomore guard Kelly Ratigan is tied for second in the Patriot League in three-pointers made per game, averaging 2.1 three-pointers per game. 
* Navy guard Zanai Barnett-Gay leads Patriot League freshmen in scoring with 18.0 points per game.

PenFed Credit Union Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Emma Theodorsson, Bucknell, So., F/G, Moon Township/Moon

* Theodorsson combined to score 41 points in Bucknell’s win against Boston University and Lafayette last week. The sophomore is averaging 16.8 ppg in League play.
* She scored a career-high 31 points against Boston University on Wednesday, which accounted for more than half of the Bison's offensive output. She went 10-of-18 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
* She added 10 points against Lafayette to assist in Bucknell's balanced attack.

PenFed Credit Union Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week
Audrey Ericksen, Boston University, Fr., G, Cary, N.C./Green Level
* Ericksen averaged 14 points and 5.5 rebounds per game on 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) shooting while hitting all five of her three-pointers across two matchups for Boston U.
* At Bucknell, she scored 11 first-half points while making four of her first five attempts from the field, and added six boards.
* In BU's win over Colgate on Saturday, she matched her career-high with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, going 3-for-3 from deep and 4-for-4 from the foul line and collecting two blocks plus two steals.

Lehigh’s Record-Breaking December Weekend
Lehigh junior guard Ella Stemmer hit 10 three-pointers against Pitt on Dec. 10 to set a Lehigh and Patriot League single-game record. She finished the game with a career-high 37 points, which tied Lehigh’s single-game scoring record, set in 1986. As a team, Lehigh set a Patriot League record with 19 made three-pointers against the Panthers. The accomplishment came one game after the Mountain Hawks tied their own League record with 17 made threes against La Salle (Dec. 7). Lehigh is fourth in NCAA DI with 10.4 3-pointers per game.

Patriot League Among NCAA Graduation Rate Leaders
The 10 Patriot League women’s basketball programs also ranked atop NCAA DI in GSR (100) and FGR (86). American, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Loyola Maryland all recorded perfect GSR scores of 100 percent. Colgate and Lehigh registered perfect FGR scores, while American (92), Boston University (92), Holy Cross (86), Loyola Maryland (86), Bucknell (79) and Lafayette (79) all finished at least 10 points above the national average. 

Caitlin Weimar Named To 2024 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year watch list
Boston University senior forward Caitlin Weimar was named to the 25-member 2024 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year watch list, announced by Her Hoop Stats in late October. This recognition marks Weimar’s first appearance on the watch list. Last year, she became the second student-athlete in BU program history to average a double-double during the season.

Patriot League Announces Women’s Basketball Schedule on CBS Sports Network
CBS Sports Network will carry both Army West Point-Navy men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders. The Mids host the Black Knights on Saturday, Jan. 20 with coverage of the women’s game beginning at 11 a.m. The times will remain the same when Army West Point hosts Navy on Saturday, Feb. 10. On Monday, January 22, Lehigh will travel to Colgate for a 4 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network. The Boston University at Holy Cross game will be televised on Monday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. The Patriot League PenFed Credit Union Women’s Basketball Championship Game will air for the 15th straight season on Sunday, March 17 at noon. Jason Knapp (play-by-play) and Leah Secondo (analyst) are the announcers for these games.
