No. 1 American and No. 2 Lafayette Advance to Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Match – (11.7.24)

Top-seeded Eagles down Terriers; Leopards hold off Bison to set up a championship game rematch

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 1 seed American (12-7, 6-0 PL) and No. 2 Lafayette (13-6, 5-1 PL) advanced to the 2024 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Match for the second straight season and the fourth time since 2019.
 
The Eagles and Leopards will play for the League title and an automatic berth into the 2024 NCAA DI Field Hockey Championship on Saturday, Nov. 9. In the first semifinal meeting, top-seeded American edged No. 4 Boston University (6-11, 3-3 PL), 1-0. Sophomore defender Sophie Willemse scored the game’s lone goal and three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Bryn Underwood recorded her eighth shutout of the season.
 
In the second matchup of the day, Lafayette got first-half goals from junior midfielder Josephine van Wijk and sophomore defender Lena Thedrian on a pair of penalty corners to down No. 3 Bucknell (8-9, 4-2 PL), 2-1. All-League goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni made two saves in the win.

WASHINGTON – Sophomore defender Sophie Willemse scored the game-winner in the 52nd minute to lift No. 1 American to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Boston University in the first semifinal matchup of the day.
*Eagles’ graduate student goalkeeper Bryn Underwood, the three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, made three saves to record the shutout and help American advance to the championship match for the second straight season.
*Sophomore forward Jordan Reicher led American with four shots, including two on goal, for an Eagles’ squad that outshot the Terriers, 21-8.
*Boston University graduate student goalkeeper Katie Thomason finished with five saves and one goal allowed in the loss.
*Terriers’ junior midfielder Amalia Preece finished with two shots on goal.

WASHINGTON – Lafayette converted a pair of first-half penalty corners, then held on to defeat Bucknell, 2-1, to advance to the Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Match for the second straight season.
*The Leopards jumped out early, as junior midfielder Josephine van Wijk converted a penalty corner on assists from senior midfielder Lineke Spaans and senior defender India Ralph at the 7:26 mark in the first quarter.
*Sophomore defender Lena Thedrian extended the Leopards’ lead to 2-0 at the 29:56 mark in the second quarter, knocking home a penalty corner with assists from Spaans and Ralph.
*Bucknell senior forward Lily Neilson, the three-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, found the back of the cage at the 29:56 mark in the second quarter to cut the Leopards’ lead in half.
*The goal was the 60th of Neilson’s career, to move into sole possession of second place in Patriot League history.
*Junior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni made two saves and allowed one goal for the Leopards to earn the win.
*Bucknell sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Althouse made five saves and allowed two goals in a loss.
