2024 Patriot League PenFed Credit Union Women’s Basketball Quarterfinal Round Recap (3.11.24)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 1 Holy Cross, No. 2 Colgate, No. 3 Boston University and No. 4 Loyola Maryland recorded victories in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Women's Basketball Championship.
 
The Crusaders earned a 61-56 win over No. 8 Bucknell, Colgate defeated No. 7 Navy (69-64), the Terriers earned a 64-62 victory over No. 6 Army West Point, and the Greyhounds took down fifth-seeded Lehigh, 58-51.
 
No. 3 Boston U. will take on No. 2 Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. at 6 p.m. while No. 1 Holy Cross will host No. 4 Loyola at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 in the semifinal round. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – No. 2 Colgate held No. 7 Navy to just six points in the third quarter to complete the 69-64 comeback win over the Midshipmen.
* Fifth-year guard Alex Brodie led the Raiders with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 17-of-18 from the line.
* Senior forward Tiasia McMillan finished with 17 points and two blocks while junior guard Taylor Golembiewski chipped in nine points.
* Brodie and Golembiewski both reached the 1,000-point milestone to become the first two active players since 2003-04 to reach the feat.
* Navy freshman guard Zanai Barnett-Gay paced the Mids with 19 points followed by senior guard Sydne Watts (18).
* Freshman guard Kyah Smith added 16 points and eight assists to wrap up her rookie year.

at No. 3 Boston University Terriers (19-11, 10-8 PL) 64, No. 6 Army West Point Black Knights (12-7, 9-9 PL) 62

BOSTON, Mass. – BU senior guard Caitlin Weimar scored the game-winning layup to seal the Terriers’ 64-62 victory versus No. 6 Army on Monday night.
* The game saw 11 lead changes with BU owning a lead for just 3:46 during the game.
* Weimar finished with a game-high 27 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
* Sophomore forward Anastasiia Semenova had 14 points and two assists, including the assist on Weimar’s game-winning bucket.
* Army had three players score double-digits; Freshman guard Fiona Hastick (17), junior guard Trinity Hardy (12) and freshman guard Camryn Tade (12).
* Fiona added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

At No. 1 Holy Cross Crusaders (18-12, 11-7 PL) 61, No. 8 Bucknell Bison (13-18, 9-9 PL) 56

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior guard Bronagh Power-Cassidy and senior forward Janelle Allen combined for 27 points to help No. 1 Holy Cross outlast No. 8 Bucknell, 61-56, to advance to the Patriot League Women’s Basketball semifinal round.
*Power-Cassidy stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, a career-high seven assists, four rebounds and four steals, while Allen added 13 points, five boards, two assists and two blocked shots to help the defending champion Crusaders advance to the semifinals for the second straight season.
*Sophomore guard Simone Foreman matched her career-high with 14 boards for the Crusaders.
*Holy Cross shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to hold off the Bison. They shot 9-of-11 for the game.
* Bucknell freshman forward Ashley Sofilkanich scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and a team-high six rebounds.
*Sophomore forward Emma Theodorsson added 16 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Bison.
*The Bison connected on 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.

at No. 4 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (15-14, 10-8 PL) 58, No. 5 Lehigh Mountain Hawks (17-12, 9-9 PL) 51

BALTIMORE, Md. – Loyola Maryland junior forward Lex Therien broke the Patriot League Women’s Basketball Championship record in rebounds in a tournament game (23) in the Greyhounds’ 58-51 win over No. 5 Lehigh.
* Loyola alum Stephanie Karcz set the rebounds record in the first round (22) in 2019.
* Therien added 13 points for her 16th double-double of the season to go with five assists and two steals.
* Junior guard Laura Salmeron finished with 20 points, while freshman guard Kimmie Hicks scored 13 points.
* Lehigh junior guard Ella Stemmer led the Mountain Hawks with 12 points – nine coming from three-pointers.
* Sophomore Lily Fandre added 11 points, three assists and two steals.
