Patriot League Champ Loyola Maryland Beats Duke in NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship First Round (5.10.24)

Greyhounds advance to face Penn on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA – Patriot League Champion Loyola Maryland (18-2, 9-0 PL) advanced to the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship Second Round after a 16-11 victory over Duke (10-9, 4-5 ACC) in an NCAA first-round matchup at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
 
The Greyhounds advanced to the second round in their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Loyola Maryland will take on No. 8 Penn on Sunday, May 12, after the Quakers defeated Richmond, 16-5. Live coverage of the Greyhounds vs. Quakers meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

PHILADELPHIA – Graduate student attack Regan Kielmeyer and junior midfielder Chase Boyle scored two goals apiece in the fourth quarter to help Loyola Maryland outscore Duke 5-0 in the final frame in a 16-11 victory in the NCAA DI Women’s Lacrosse Championship First Round meeting at Franklin Field.
*Kielmeyer finished with a career-high five goals, while Boyle finished with three goals, a team-high seven draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers to help Loyola Maryland advance to the second round in their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
*Graduate student midfielder Catie Corolla recorded a career-high three goals, while senior attack Sydni Black finished with one goal, a team-high two assists and five draw controls.
*Junior goalkeeper Lauren Spence recorded five saves, one ground ball and one caused turnover.
*The Greyhounds overcame an early two-goal deficit, using a four-goal run between the first and second quarters, with Kielmeyer, Black and Corolla putting Loyola Maryland in front 6-4 with 6:27 left in the first half.
*Duke retook the lead in the third quarter with a three-goal run before the teams traded goals to enter the fourth quarter tied at 11.
*Loyola Maryland held the Blue Devils to just two shots on goal in the fourth quarter, both saved by Spence, while Kielmeyer and Boyle scored two goals apiece, and senior midfielder Alanna Wray added one to help the Greyhounds cruise to a win.
