No. 1 Loyola Maryland Outlasts No. 2 Navy in Overtime to Capture 2024 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship (5.4.24)

Greyhounds’ Sydni Black claims second Patriot League Championship MVP honor

BALTIMOREJunior attack Georgia Latch’s overtime goal lifted No. 1 Loyola Maryland (17-2, 9-0 PL) to a 12-11 victory over No. 2 Navy (15-4, 8-1 PL) to capture its fifth straight Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship and the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on a rainy day at Ridley Athletic Complex.
 
Senior attack Sydni Black, the Patriot League Attacker of the Year, finished with five points on four goals and one assist to earn her second-consecutive Patriot League Championship MVP honor. Black is the third women’s lacrosse student-athlete to claim tournament MVP honors twice, joining former teammate Livy Rosenzweig (2021-22) and Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo (2011-13).
 
Greyhounds’ junior midfielder Chase Boyle matched Black for a team-high five points on four goals and one assist to join her on the All-Tournament Team. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Spence made nine saves after recording the first shutout in Patriot League Championship history in the semifinal round, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team, along with junior defender Lily Osborne.
 
Navy junior midfielder Emily Messinese earned All-Tournament honors after scoring a game-high five goals, including the final two in regulation to send the game to overtime. Her late-game heroics led to the second overtime game in Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship Game history and the first since Colgate defeated American in extra time in 2004. The Mids’ junior defender Alyssa Daley and senior defender Caroline Stefans also received All-Tournament honors.
 
Holy Cross freshman midfielder Annabel Brennan and sophomore defender Racheli Levy-Smith, along with Lehigh senior goalkeeper Haley Hunt and graduate student midfielder Cassie Marte, were named to the 11-member All-Tournament squad.
 
Loyola Maryland will learn its postseason fate when the field of 29 is announced during the 2024 NCAA DI Women’s Lacrosse Selection Show on Sunday, May 5. Live coverage of the selection show is available on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. ET.

BALTIMORELoyola Maryland junior attack Georgia Latch scored the game-winning goal at the 4:36 mark of the first overtime to lead the No. 1 Greyhounds to a 12-11 victory over No. 2 Navy to claim their fifth straight Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
*Patriot League Championship MVP Sydni Black and junior midfielder Chase Boyle posted five points apiece on identical stat lines of four goals and one assist.
*Junior goalkeeper Lauren Spence made nine saves to help the Greyhounds earn the Patriot League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.
*Navy junior midfielder Emily Messinese scored a game-high five goals, including the final two of regulation, to tie the score at 11.
*Sophomore Emma Kennedy recorded a career-high five points on three goals and two assists, while junior defender Alyssa Daley collected a game-high 10 draw controls for the Mids.
*Navy freshman goalkeeper Felicia Giglio made a career-high 10 saves in the loss.
*The Mids and Greyhounds entered the game first and third, respectively, in NCAA DI in draw control percentage, with the teams collecting 13 draws apiece.


HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Greyhounds and Mids played to an even 3-3 score in the first quarter. Boyle scored two goals, and Latch added two assists for Loyola Maryland, while Kennedy, Messinese and sophomore attack Kat McAteer scored goals for Navy.
*McAteer opened the second quarter with a Navy goal before Black scored twice during a 3-0 Greyhounds’ run to retake the lead at 6-4.
*Messinese and Kennedy posted consecutive goals to close the half, tying the score at six apiece.
*Loyola Maryland and Navy tied four times with three lead changes in the first half.
*The Greyhounds’ Regan Kielmeyer and Boyle opened the third quarter with goals to extend their lead to two goals, but Messinese added her third goal of the game to cut the deficit to one, at 8-7
*Patriot League Rookie of the Year Mikayla Williams and Kennedy each scored in the final four minutes of the third quarter to take a 9-8 lead into the final frame.
*Giglio made three third-quarter saves to help the Mids outscore Loyola 3-2 in the period.
*Black tied the score at nine at the 10:11 mark in the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal, then put the Greyhounds in front 12 seconds later with her fourth goal of the game.
*Boyle matched Black with her fourth goal of the game with 7:46 remaining in the game to give Loyola Maryland an 11-9 lead.
*For the fifth time in the game, Navy erased a two-goal deficit as Messinese scored the final two goals of regulation to send the Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship Game to overtime for the first time since 2004.
*Latch scored the game-winner at the 4:36 mark in overtime to lift Loyola Maryland to their fifth straight Patriot League title and the League’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
