Patriot League Announces Men’s Soccer Players of the Week (8.26.24)

Colgate collects three weekly honors, Army West Point and Lehigh receive one apiece

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Colgate took three of the Patriot League men’s soccer weekly awards when the League office announced the first set of honors for the 2024 season on Monday. Army West Point and Lehigh each received one weekly honor.
 
Colgate sophomore forward Jack Beerling was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Virginia. His teammates also earned recognition, with Jacob Blackwin named Defensive Player of the Week and Oliver Townend receiving Goalkeeper of the Week honors for their roles in a 1-1 week, including the upset win over the Cavaliers.

Army West Point forward Ronald Zhai was honored as Rookie of the Week after scoring a goal at Penn State and recording two shots on goal over two games.
 
Lehigh midfielder Noah Levy earned Midfielder of the Week for playing all 90 minutes in the team’s 0-0 draw with La Salle.
 
Honorable mentions went to Boston University graduate student goalkeeper Andrew Wike, junior defender Quin DeLaMater, Colgate first-year defender Julian Di Lucia, Loyola Maryland junior forward Charlie Herley, and Bucknell junior goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth.
 
The Patriot League men’s soccer players of the week are selected by a vote of League head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

Jack Beerling, Colgate, Sophomore, Kent, England/Beths Grammar
  • Beerling scored his first career goal, the game-winner, in a 1-0 upset at No. 13 Virginia.
  • He scored decisive goal, coming in the 36th minute, was a long-range strike that found the bottom left corner.
  • The senior forward contributed 117 minutes for the Raiders across two games last week.

  • Levy played a key role in securing a shutout in the season opener against La Salle.

Jacob Blackwin, Colgate, Jr., Defender, Rollinsford, N.H./Berkshire School
  • Blackwin led Colgate’s backline in the 1-0 win at No.13 Virginia
  • He helped the defense fend off eight corner kicks to keep UVA scoreless
  • The Rollinsford, N.H. native recorded all 180 minutes across two games for the Raiders last week
Patriot League Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week
Oliver Townend, Colgate, Sr., Goalkeeper, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas/Darlington School
  • Townsend recorded a career-high eight saves in a 1-0 shutout victory at No. 13 Virginia.
  • He made a crucial save on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to maintain the lead.
  • The Bahamas native delivered two game-saving saves in the final six minutes to secure his seventh career shutout.
  • He registered a total of 11 saves last week against No. 25 Syracuse and No. 13 Virginia.

Ronald Zhai, Army West Point, Fr., Forward, San Ramon, CA./ Monte Vista
  • Zhai recorded a goal in the 18th minute in Army West Point’s match at Penn State.
  • He tallied two shots on goal on three shots in two games

Quin DeLaMater, Boston University, Jr., Defender, Marietta, Ga./ Hillgrove
  • DeLaMater played all 90 minutes in the backline to help Boston University earn a 0-0 draw against No.9 New Hampshire. Led the Terriers’ defense in defending against nine UNH corner kicks. The draw extends the Terriers’ home unbeaten streak to 15 games, the third longest active streak in the country.
Julian Di Lucia, Colgate, Fy., Defender, Markham, Ontario/ Scarborough Academy
  • Di Lucia helped Colgate’s backline in a 1-0 shutout win at No. 13 Virginia. The first-year played 173 of 180 minutes for the Raiders last week and helped fend off eight corner kicks from UVA.
Charlie Herley, Loyola Maryland, Jr., Defender, Maplewood, NJ
  • Herley started his first game on the back line at right back. He scored the Greyhounds’ lone goal on Thursday, as he started the second half by intercepting the ball from an NJIT defender before he shot the ball, beating the goalkeeper for the goal. Herley played a crucial role in the Greyhounds’ 1-1 draw, as he played all 90 minutes.
Freddie Lapworth, Bucknell, Jr., Goalkeeper, Banbury, England/ Banbury Academy
  • Lapworth tallied seven saves in the opening-day shutout of Robert Morris, with five of those saves coming in the second half to keep the Bison in the lead.
Andrew Wike, Boston University, Gr., Goalkeeper, Edwardsville, Ill./ Edwardsville
  • Wike recorded five saves to help Boston University earn a 0-0 draw against No. 9 New Hampshire. Wike’s fully extending leaping save in the 86th minute sealed the draw for the Terriers.
