Patriot League Field Hockey Players of the Week Announced (9.2.24)

Spaans, Thedrian, Fragomeni and Monti collect first set of awards for 2024 season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lafayette captured three of the four Patriot League field hockey weekly awards when the League office announced the first set of weekly honors of the 2024 season on Monday. Holy Cross earned one accolade.
 
Lafayette senior midfielder Lineke Spaans picked up her second Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week after scoring one goal in each of the Leopards’ wins against Vermont (2-1) and Delaware (1-0).
 
Leopards’ sophomore defender Lena Thedrian earned Defensive Player of the Week after keying a defensive effort that allowed one goal in two games. She made a defensive save in Lafayette’s 2-1 win over Vermont.
 
Lafayette junior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni claimed Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. She recorded a shutout in a 1-0 victory over Delaware on Sunday after holding Vermont to one goal in a 2-1 win on Thursday.  
 
Holy Cross freshman forward Jocelyn Monti was voted Patriot League Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. She posted one goal and one assist to help the Crusaders open the season 2-0 with wins over Stonehill (3-1) and LIU (4-3).
 
American sophomore midfielder Sarah Steinman, Boston University sophomore goalkeeper Sophie Ortyl, Bucknell sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Althouse and junior defender Kira Leclercq, Holy Cross senior forward Meggan Fourie, freshman goalkeeper Mia McCloskey and junior defender Megan Schienbein all received honorable mentions for their performances last week. 
 
The Patriot League field hockey players of the week are selected in a vote by League head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lineke Spaans, Lafayette, Sr., Midfielder, Bussum, Netherlands/Vitus College
*Spaans scored two goals, one in each of Lafayette’s victories against Vermont (2-1) and Delaware (1-0) to help the Leopards open the season 2-0.  
*The Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year found the back of the cage in the 26th minute to put the Leopards in front 2-0 in an eventual 2-1 win against the Catamounts.
*She scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first quarter of Lafayette’s 1-0 win against the Blue Hens on Sunday.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lena Thedrian, Lafayette, So., Defender, Hamburg, Germany/Rudolf Steiner Schulte Hamburg-Wandsbek
*Thedrian led a Lafayette defense that allowed just one goal through the Leopards’ 2-0 start to the season, including a 2-1 win over Vermont and a 1-0 victory over Delaware.
*Against the Catamounts, Thedrian recorded one defensive save and helped hold Vermont to six total shots and three corners.
*The Hamburg, Germany native helped a Leopards’ defense shut out the Blue Hens, holding them to 10 total shots and just five on goal.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Raffi Fragomeni, Lafayette, Jr., Goalkeeper, Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes
*Fragomeni posted a .889 save percentage and .500 goals-against average to lead the Leopards to a 2-0 weekend with wins against Vermont (2-1) and Delaware (1-0).
*She made five saves to record a shutout in Lafayette’s victory over the Blue Hens on Sunday.
*The junior goalkeeper made three saves and allowed one goal in a season-opening win over the Catamounts on Friday.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Jocelyn Monti, Holy Cross, Fr., Forward, Harding, N.J./Oak Knoll School
*Monti recorded one goal and one assist in two games to help the Crusaders start the season 2-0 with wins against Stonehill (3-1) and LIU (4-3).
*She sealed Holy Cross’s wins over Stonehill with her first collegiate goal with less than five minutes remaining against the Skyhawks on Friday.  
*She assisted Meggan Fourie’s game-tying goal in a win against LIU on Sunday.

Sarah Steinman, American, So., Midfielder, Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen
*Steinman scored her first goal of the season in the first quarter of the Eagles’ 3-1 loss to No. 7 Louisville on Sunday.  
 
Sophie Ortyl, Boston University, So., Goalkeeper, Lexington, Mass./Lexington
*Ortyl made seven saves and recorded a shutout in her first collegiate start to lead Boston University to a 3-0 victory over Providence in their season opener. She also made four saves in one half of play against No. 17 Boston College on Sunday.
 
Sarah Althouse, Bucknell, So., Goalkeeper, Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg
*Althouse recorded 15 saves and a .714 save percentage in matches against Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State. She made 10 saves against the No. 14 Buckeyes on Sunday in a 4-1 loss.   
 
Kira Leclercq, Bucknell, Jr., Defender, Berlin, Germany/Vicco von Bulow Gymnasium Stahnsdorf
*Leclercq recorded three defensive saves in a loss vs. No. 14 Ohio State on Sunday. Her 15 career defensive saves are tied for second in Bucknell program history.  
 
Meggan Fourie, Holy Cross, Sr., Forward, Empangeni, Kwa-Zulu, South Africa/St. Mary’s DSG Kloof School for Girls
*Fourie totaled three goals during the opening weekend to lead Holy Cross to wins against Stonehill (3-1) and LIU (4-3). She scored two goals, including a penalty stroke, to lead the Crusaders’ 4-3 comeback victory against the Sharks. The senior forward scored the first goal of the game in Holy Cross’s victory against the Skyhawks.
 
Mia McCloskey, Holy Cross, Fr., Goalkeeper, Villanova, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur
*McCloskey posted a .667 save percentage and 2.77 goals-against average to help the Crusaders to a 2-0 opening weekend with wins over Stonehill (3-1) and LIU (4-3).
 
Megan Schienbein, Holy Cross, Jr., Defender, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Ecloe Windsor Secondary
*Schienbein helped a Crusaders’ defense that limited a pair of opponents to four goals in 129:38 minutes of play. She also assisted Julia Carrozza’s game-winning goal in the Crusaders’ 3-1 win vs. Stonehill.
