2025 Credit Union 1 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Semifinals Recap: No. 2 Lafayette and No. 4 Boston University Advance to Saturday’s Championship Match (11.6.25)

Lauro lifts fourth-seeded Terriers; Malinowski and Gibb send Leopards to title game for third straight season

WASHINGTON – No. 2 Lafayette (13-6, 5-1 PL) and No. 4 Boston University (7-10, 3-3 PL) advanced to the 2025 Credit Union 1 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Match after earning victories in Thursday’s semifinal round at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex at American University.
 
The fourth-seeded Terriers upset top-seeded American, 1-0, behind a goal from junior midfielder Nicole Lauro to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game for the first time since 2022. BU is the first No. 4 seed to advance to the League title game since 2011.
 
The defending Patriot League champion Leopards received third-quarter goals from junior midfielder Stella Malinowski and junior defender Katie Gibb to defeat third-seeded Bucknell, 2-1, advancing to play for the crown for the third straight season.
 
Saturday’s Credit Union 1 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship Game will be available live on ESPN+ with Cory Nidoh calling play-by-play and Gabrielle DiPaula providing analysis. Live coverage begins at 1 p.m.

WASHINGTON – Boston University junior midfielder Nicole Lauro scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Delfi Coulo with 1:24 remaining in the first half, and the fourth-seeded Terriers’ defense did the rest to upset No. 1 American, 1-0, in the first semifinal of the 2025 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship.
*Lauro broke a scoreless tie late in the first half, redirecting the feed from freshman midfielder Delfi Coulo past the goalkeeper to give BU the lead, despite the Eagles outshooting the Terriers, 5-1, in the first half.
*American continued to put pressure on Boston University’s backline, drawing six penalty corners in the second half and outshooting BU, 10-3.
*BU junior goalkeeper Sophie Ortyl made two saves for her third shutout of the season.
*Patriot League Rookie of the Year Lotti Sume managed a game-high four shots with one on goal.
*Eagles’ senior goalkeeper Pauline Gineste recorded two saves and allowed one goal.

WASHINGTON – Junior midfielder Stella Malinowski and junior defender Katie Gibb scored third-quarter goals to lift No. 2 Lafayette to a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Bucknell to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game for the third straight season.
*Malinowski scored the game’s first goal less than four minutes into the third quarter, knocking in a rebound in front of the cage to put the Leopards in front, 1-0.
*Gibb extended the Leopards’ lead to two, driving down the left side of the field and finding the back of the cage with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter.
* Two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Kira Leclercq of Bucknell scored on a penalty stroke late in the fourth quarter to put the Bison on the scoreboard. Leclercq recorded all seven of Bucknell’s shots.
*Senior Raffi Fragomeni, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, made one save to earn the win for Lafayette.
*Bucknell junior goalkeeper Sarah Althouse made nine saves, including six in the first half.
