Patriot League Swimming and Diving Academic Awards Announced (2.27.25)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola Maryland senior Patrick Hayburn and graduate student Lily Mead were named the 2025 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar Athletes of the Year, respectively, when announced by the League office on Thursday.

The duo was named to their respective Academic All-Patriot League Teams, comprised of other swimming and diving student-athletes from the Patriot League. Eight of the 10 schools were represented on this year’s Academic All-Patriot League men’s and women’s teams with Loyola Maryland placing seven members on the two teams (five men, two women), while Army West Point (one man, four women), and Navy (three men, two women) each had five.

Greyhounds’ senior Patrick Hayburn is joined by teammates senior Michael Gozdan (finance, 3.71), sophomore Joe Hayburn (finance/information systems & data analytics, 4.0), senior Henry Mueller (finance & economics, 3.82) and sophomore Hans van Lierop (computer science, 4.0) on the Patriot League Men’s All-Academic Team. Army West Point junior Joey Kling (mechanical engineering, 3.68) Bucknell seniors Andy Dorsel (biology & microbiology, 3.60) and Chris Kopac (business analytics, 3.88) Lafayette senior Andrew Campbell (biology, 3.93) and Navy senior Jake Douberly (operations research, 3.81), sophomore Ben Irwin (operations research, 3.65) and sophomore Ben Mauldin (physics, 3.32) rounded out the All-Academic Team selections.

On the women’s side, Mead is accompanied by Army West Point’s senior Meghan Cole (operations research, 3.66), senior Maggie Kroening (engineering psychology, 3.68), junior Molly Webber (computer science, 3.87) and senior Clara Williams (space science, 3.32). American graduate student Mimi Watts (theory and methods,3.85), Boston University junior Haley Newman (English, 3.26), Bucknell senior Skye Sunderhauf (animal behavior & environmental studies, 3.87), Colgate sophomore MG King (undeclared, 4.00), Loyola Maryland sophomore Riley Fried (English & political science, 3.97), Navy junior Sarah Eldridge (ocean and atmospheric science, 3.23) and senior Caroline Irwin (data science, 3.37) were all recognized on the Patriot League Women’s All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player within their sport. Freshmen or student-athletes in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out during the summer.

These honors recognize student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom. The awards are voted on by Patriot League men’s and women’s swimming and diving sports information directors, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

2025 Patriot League Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Patrick Hayburn, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Bowie, Md./St. Mary’s
*Hayburn holds a 4.0 GPA as he pursues his bachelor’s degrees in Finance and Information Systems & Data Analysis at Loyola Maryland.
*The senior is a three-time Academic All-Patriot League Team selection (2023-25), a two-time First Team All-Patriot League honoree (2023, 2025) and a Second Team All-Patriot League member in 2024.
*Hayburn finished as the Greyhounds’ top point-scorer at the 2025 Patriot League Championships with 75 points after leading Loyola Maryland with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly, a sixth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and a seventh place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
*Additionally, he guided the Greyhounds to the 200-yard medley relay title while swimming on the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay and third-place 400-yard medley relay squads.
*Serving as the Vice President for Loyola University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2023-24, Hayburn was named to the Dean’s List in all seven semesters.
*The Bowie, Md. native was a project management intern at Leadline, Inc. and a data analyst intern at Real Projectives.

2025 Patriot League Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Lily Mead, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Timonium, Md./Dulaney
*Mead holds a 3.86 GPA as she pursues a Master’s degree in Forensic Pattern Analysis.
*She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology in May 2024 from Loyola Maryland with a 3.84 GPA.
*The Timonium, Md. was named the 2025 Patriot League Women’s Swimmer of the Meet after tying for the most points at the championships and leading the Greyhounds to a fourth-place team finish, the best in program history.
*Additionally, she won three individual events (200-yard IM, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke), was a part of the Greyhounds’ first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team and set Patriot League Championship records in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events the League meet.
*The graduate student holds Loyola Maryland records in 12 individual events and won eight Patriot League individual titles over her career.
*Mead is a four-time All-Patriot League First Team (2022-25) honoree and a four-time Patriot League All-Academic selection.
