BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Boston University men’s soccer team earned the top spot in the 2025 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll, as the Terriers collected two major awards while Bucknell and American each claimed one, the League office announced Wednesday.
The 2024 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Tournament No. 1 seed returns as the preseason favorite with 75 points and four first-place votes. Defending champion Bucknell placed second with 70 points and four first-place votes, while American rounded out the top three with 67 points and two first-place votes.
Loyola Maryland ranked fourth with 54 points, followed by Colgate in fifth with 49. Lehigh (40), Navy (31), Lafayette (31), Army West Point (22) and Holy Cross (11) rounded out the poll.
American senior forward Troy Elgersma was named the 2025 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Elgersma, the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year, led the League in assists (6) last season while helping the Eagles earn the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
Boston University senior midfielder Diego Rived earned 2025 Preseason Midfielder of the Year honors after winning the award in 2024. Rived started all 17 games last season, helping the Terriers secure the No. 1 seed in the League Tournament.
Teammate Quin DeLaMater was voted the 2025 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after also earning the award in 2024. The senior defender started 15 games last season, posting nine points while anchoring the Terriers’ defense.
Bucknell senior goalkeeper Fred Lapworth was named the 2025 Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year after helping the Bison capture their first Patriot League Championship since 2014. The 2024 Goalkeeper of the Year led the League with eight shutouts and ranked second with 71 saves.
Voting for the Preseason All-Patriot League Men’s Soccer Team, major awards and the preseason poll was completed by Patriot League women’s soccer head coaches from the 10 League schools. They cannot vote for their team or student-athletes.
2024 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Troy Elgersma, American, Jr., F, Redlands, Calif. / Redlands
2024 Stats: 19 GP, 19 GS, 2 goals, 7 assists, 13 points
*Elgersma led the League in assists (7), ranked tied for second in game-winning goals (2), and tied for fifth in points (13).
*The junior forward started all 19 games, helping power an Eagles offense that finished tied for second in the League with 25 goals scored.
*Over 55 career appearances, Elgersma has recorded 28 points on seven goals and 14 assists.
*In the 2024 Patriot League Tournament semifinal win over Loyola Maryland, he tallied an assist and converted a penalty kick to advance the Eagles to the semifinal match.
2024 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
Diego Rived, Boston University, Jr., M, Zaragoza, Spain / Doral Academy Prep (Fla.)
2024 Stats: 18 GP, 17 GS, 1 goal, 3 assists, 5 points
*The reigning 2024 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year returns after starting 17 games last season, recording one goal and three assists for five points, including his first career goal against Army West Point.
*Rived played a key role in helping the Terriers post four shutouts and secure a share of the regular-season title with a 4-1-4 League record.
*Entering his senior campaign, the Zaragoza, Spain native has seven career points in 54 appearances for Boston University.
2024 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Quin DeLaMater, Boston University, Jr., D, Marietta, Ga. /Hillgrove
2024 Stats: 17 GP, 15 GS, 3 goals, 3 assists, 9 points
*The 2024 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year is back after starting 15 games last season, tallying three goals and three assists for nine points while anchoring a Terrier defense that earned the No. 1 seed.
*DeLaMater was instrumental in leading Boston University’s defensive unit to four shutouts during the 2024 campaign.
*The senior has appeared in 42 games, starting 33 and has tallied nine career points on three goals and three assists.
2024 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Fred Lapworth, Bucknell, Jr., GK, Banbury, England / Banbury Academy
2024 Stats: 20 GP, 20 GS, 71 saves, 1.04 goals against average, 8 shutouts
*Lapworth led the League with eight shutouts and ranked second with 71 saves, helping the Bison capture the Patriot League Championship last season.
*The senior earned back-to-back Goalkeeper of the Week honors (9.23 and 9.30) and recorded five shutouts in League play, finishing with the League’s best goals-against average (.556).
*Over his career, Lapworth has made 127 saves and recorded nine shutouts in 38 appearances for Bucknell.
2025 Preseason All-Patriot League Men’s Soccer by the Numbers (2024 Stats)
Ten of the 11 student-athletes named to the 2025 Preseason All-Patriot League Men’s Soccer Team earned spots on one of the three 2024 All-Patriot League Teams.
Elgersma, Rived, DeLaMater and Lapworth were joined on the first team by Boston University junior midfielder Andrea Di Blasio and Bucknell junior midfielder Jimmy Pombor.
2024 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year and Colgate sophomore forward Blake Pipkin, Lafayette senior forward Beaux Lizewski and Loyola Maryland graduate defender Jordy Luchies earned second-team honors, while Colgate senior midfielder Cason Stafford was a third-team selection.
