Welcome back to the Patriot League Newsletter for the Spring 2003 semester. We in the League office certainly hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season and have enjoyed the abundant snowfall we've received so far this year in the Northeast.
Most of this week's newsletter highlights award winners from the fall season and looks ahead to the opening weekend of the League basketball schedule. League play begins Saturday with doubleheaders at Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross and Navy.
Important events on the schedule in the next 10 days are the League's second basketball teleconference of the season on Thursday (available on broadcastmonsters.com), the end of six fabulous decades at BU's Davis Gymnasium Saturday and the dedication of new courts at American and Bucknell next Wednesday.
The other new feature to basketball's regular season is six games being broadcast by DIRECTV on consecutive Fridays, beginning with Lafayette's cross-valley trip to Lehigh on Jan. 24. The games will be available on DIRECTV channel 611, with starting time slated for 9 p.m.
In the League office, we're busy planning for the upcoming three winter championships. On the third weekend of February, the swimming and diving championships will be held at Bucknell's new natatorium (Feb. 20-22), and Colgate will host the indoor track and field championships (Feb. 21-23). The League's showcase event, held March 7-9 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., is the 13th annual basketball championship tournament. All three championships feature top-quality competition and outstanding performances.
For those planning ahead, tickets for the basketball tournament, as well as hotel information in the D.C. area, are available by calling the Patriot League office at (610) 289-1950. Group discounts and early-bird special (before Feb. 2) ticket prices are available.
So find a way to shovel yourself out of the house and join in the fun at a venue near you. The teams appreciate the support, and hopefully you'll enjoy the experience of Patriot League action.
