Bucknell gained two championships and two second-place finishes in six winter sports to take a commanding lead in the 2002 Patriot League Presidents' Cup Standings heading into the spring season.
Through 13 men's and women's sports in the fall and winter seasons, the Bison have compiled 76.5 points to take a 16-point lead into the spring season over American (60.5). BU won the President's Cup in eight of the first 11 years of the Patriot League.
Lehigh (57.5) and Army (56.0) are battling American for second-place in the standings entering the spring season, followed by Colgate (47.5), Holy Cross (45.5), Lafayette (42.5) and Navy (38.0).
BU held a two-point lead over American entering the winter season, but captured team titles in women's basketball and women's indoor track & field and added second-place finishes in women's swimming and diving as well as men's indoor track & field to pull away from the pack.
American remained in second-place in the overall standings by virtue of second-place finishes in men's basketball, men's swimming and diving and a third-place finish in women's swimming and diving.
Other winter championships were won by the Holy Cross men's basketball team, the Lehigh men's swimming and diving team, the Army men's track & field team and the Navy women's swimming and diving team.
Broken down by gender, Bucknell (47.0) has a 14.5-point lead over American (32.5) and Army (32.5) in the Women's Presidents' Cup Standings. On the men's side, Lehigh (30.0) holds a slim lead over Bucknell (29.5), American (28.0), Colgate (25.5), Army (23.5) and Holy Cross (23.0) in an extremely balanced race.
Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the final PL standings. In football and individual sports, such as cross country, swimming and diving and track and field, the points are awarded on the final team standings. In team sports, such as basketball, field hockey, soccer and volleyball, points are awarded based on a combination of the League championship tournament and regular-season standings (for those that do not qualify for the League championship tournament).
