Terry Mangan has been named head men's lacrosse coach at Lafayette. Mangan, whose most recent assistant coaching duties covered two years at the University of Massachusetts, joins the Lafayette coaching staff as the 18th head coach in the program's 76-year history.

Mangan served as an assistant coach at UMass for the past two seasons where the Minutemen posted a combined record of 24-6. In 2002, the team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before losing an overtime decision to then No. 1 Johns Hopkins.

Mangan assisted with the offense and was the goaltender and faceoff coordinator at UMass. He was responsible for helping UMass win over 50 percent of its faceoffs this past season. He also oversaw the development of a freshman goaltender who started the last 11 contests, including both NCAA Tournament games. In 2001, Mangan helped coach UMass' goaltender to All-America status, and the team's faceoff specialist finished second in the nation in faceoff winning percentage.

"I'm excited to be able to hire a dynamic coach who has championship caliber experience to take over the men's lacrosse program," said Lafayette Director of Athletics Bruce McCutcheon. "Terry brings significant coaching experience and a heightened measure of energy to the position. His hiring is a positive move as we build a competitive-based lacrosse program."

Prior to joining the UMass staff, Mangan was an assistant coach at Hobart for four seasons from 1996-2000. While there, Mangan acquired his knowledge of the Patriot League, as Hobart is an associate member in men's lacrosse. He was the defensive coordinator and goalkeeper coach at Hobart, during which time the Statesmen made two NCAA Tournament appearances and captured the 2000 Patriot League championship.

Mangan was an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1996 season following two seasons at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (1993-95). From 1990-92, Mangan spent time as an assistant coach at Washington College (Md.) and head coach at Archbishop Spalding (Md.). He earned Anne Arundel Sun Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year honors in 1992 for his prep coaching.

"I am excited about the opportunity to lead Lafayette lacrosse into a new era," Mangan said. "I am anxious to start working with the team, but my first order of business this summer is to start recruiting outstanding student-athletes for the future."

Mangan graduated from Roanoke College in Salem, Va. in 1988 following a distinguished lacrosse career. From the goalkeeper position, Mangan earned four varsity letters and helped lead his team to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his four seasons. He finished his career with the third most saves in Roanoke history with 452.

A native of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. on Long Island, Mangan replaces Bill Lawson who retired after 31 seasons as Lafayette's men's lacrosse coach.
