Lehigh University announced that beginning this fall, almost 150 Lehigh athletic events will be broadcast on the Internet during the 2001-2002 season.
Lehigh has long been a leader in collegiate sports broadcasting on local radio and television, and is now paving the way for the future: broadcasting not just the ticket-selling sports, but a myriad of athletic events on-line. Fans can log onto the Lehigh web site (www.lehigh.edu/sports) and tune in to select volleyball, field hockey, and men's and women's soccer matches, which will air exclusively on the web. In the spring, many baseball, softball, and men's and women's lacrosse contests will also air on the Internet.
"Lehigh fans, parents, and alumni have always supported our athletic programs, and we want them to continue to be able to do so, no matter where they may be," said Lehigh Associate Athletic Director Glenn Hofmann. "We have heard so many positive comments from people who have listened to our football, wrestling, and basketball games on the web, and we wanted to afford similar opportunities to as many of our fans and supporters in as many sports as possible."
Once again, all Lehigh football games and wrestling dual meets will air on Yahoo! Broadcast (formerly Broadcast.com). Football games can also be heard throughout the Lehigh Valley on WKAP (1470 AM) with Matt Kerr and Marty Horn. Wrestling dual meets will air locally on ESPN 1230 (WEEX-AM) with Doug Heater calling all the action.
Lehigh has also worked out a deal with FASTNET to provide live streaming of all other athletic events that are broadcast, including men's and women's basketball. Men's basketball games can also be heard locally on WKAP (1470 AM) with Matt Kerr and Greg Falkenbach. The women's games - all contests home and away - can be heard on Lehigh's web site with Jeff Tourial providing the play-by-play. Select women's basketball games will also air on WLVR (91.3 FM).
The extensive broadcast plan comes on the heels of the grand opening of the brand-new Ronald J. Ulrich Field, a complex on Lehigh's scenic Goodman Campus housing both a grass and artificial turf field. Designed by Lehigh students, the new facility features an entrance plaza, permanent seats, lighting for night contests, and a press box. Jeff Tourial will broadcast all of the action from the new facility, and will also head the coverage of volleyball, baseball, and softball broadcasts.
The Fall 2001 broadcast schedule includes 8 field hockey matches, 8 men's soccer matches, 7 women's soccer matches, and 7 volleyball contests, and plans may include the broadcast of any post-season action. The first event scheduled for broadcast is on Friday, August 29, when the Lehigh field hockey team hosts Temple at 4:00 p.m. All broadcasts can be heard on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu/sports.
